sim registration failed

Son got phone off e-bay, the phone has a problem where every sim reads sim reg failed on the screen or, the sim card seems ok but beeps 3 times when you try to call out.
 Advice please
 Thanks
It means the phone cannot get to the network to log on or it cannot read the account information from the sim correctly and hence cannot use this to connect to the network.
 Possible causes
Faulty sim card/ Expired sim card / really old 5V sim and the phone only works with a 3.3V sim.
Phone is not reading sim card correctly, ie sim card reader bit damaged
 Network failure in your area
 Phone blacklisted at the network
If the sim does not work in any phone it's a SIM fault.
If the sim works in another phone it points to a problem in the phone
If the phone works with another SIM on another network it would suggest the phones blacklisted.0

Phone's most possibly locked to the previous network,I get that on my old BT Mobile phone when I went to use my O2 sim.The phone I have you cannot unlock so I had to use a Turbo Sim in it to get it to work.0

Unless it's locked to another network (check the network it was on before you got it)
If not as its from Ebay I'd think it's been blacklisted. Either as a lost/stolen or as a fraudulent application.
In either case the network won't unblock it, sorry.0

Thanks for replies, ok , son is going to try all major network sim cards in phone if however problem is still the same ,failed sim reg,3 beeps etc, what do you think this would suggest.
 All phone's other functions ok.
Phone was listed as unlockedso don't know original network.
 Thanks0

If the phone is network-locked, you get asked to enter subsidy or unlock or similar code
If there is poor contact between the SIM and the card reader, the message would probably be Insert SIM card
If a SIM hasn't been used for so long it's been cut off, you get this current message
But if you get this with several SIMs, and if those SIMs work fine in other phones, this phone would seem to be blacklisted.
This doesn't mean it's absolutely certain to have been stolen, but it's not promising. It can happen though that the original owner coincidentally loses their current phone and the old one is still in the records and therefore gets incorrectly blocked, in which case it should be possible to have their network unblock it again. But I suspect that is fairly rare.0

There are website where you can check if a phones blacklisted (which I can't remember the url's for, sorry!), don't know how up to date they are?
Or call your network and ask them to check the IMEI (just enter *#06# in the phone and the IMEI comes up). All networks have an up to date list of blacklisted IMEI's.0

Now if the phone is balcklisted then they probably wont work but they will unlock unlockabe phones like my BT Mobile Nokie 6136.
Just do a search on Google for Turbo Sim & the make of the phone.0

Sounds like the phone is blacklisted. It's definitely not locked. If it were, you will not get past the "Enter Subsidy unlock screen". Here is what I think: When you try to make a call, the network checks the IMEI and recognizes it as a blacklisted one, and denies the call. That's may be why you hear the 3 tones when you try to call out.0

 Thanks,
Could not try what you suggested as can't get it to open.
However lets assume son has bought a " lemon", would using a turbo sim enable him to use phone.
Also my spare phone is hardlocked, 5 code tries and your out, would turbo sim be any good or would I still need to go to stall or shop to get it unlocked.
Thanks all, for help so far,appreciated.0
