What would annoy me more than the money is that the parents didn't call you to discuss it. It's more than a courtesy, it's a big responsibility to take a child away for a day and if it were my child I would want to know all sorts of info.
I think it's reasonable to want to know how they were travelling, when they would be home, exchange mobile phone numbers, let them know if my child had any issues (asthma, allergies etc), ask if they intended both girls to go off on their own for a while.
Perhaps this is me being over-protective but 12 is still young to be away from family (IMO).

I agree with Eric's Mum too.
My daughter is 12 and my son is 14, but I still want to know where they are going, who they are going to be with and where other kids live and landlines etc, if they are stopping over somewhere.
My son had a mate staying over for his 14th bday last month. Son asked his friend who then asked his Mum. His Mum rang me and asked where we live and exchanged numbers, we asked her if there was anything we ought to know about her son and whether he was OK to eat anything. It only took 5 minutes but it's just peace of mind for all concerened.
It's a huge thing taking responsibility for someone else's child. Even if my daughter asks if a friend can come in to ours for a bit, I always tell them to let the friends Mum know where she is.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
