poor woman. I think it was more of a "is there anyway this can be sped up?" and "any tips for living with the reduced income?" post than a "how can i get as much money off the state as possible?" one. Whilst i agree with a lot of the comments i think that the anger was misdirected on the OP. I think that she is trying to do the best for her family and its screwed up that as she said herself that she would be worse off working more hours. Its not her fault that thats the way it is.
The need for families to have two incomes seems to be a very recent phenomenon. The cost of living is shocking (just for the basics like our houses and food), and we also expect a lot more than the previous generations. We feel that we NEED to go away for a holiday for two weeks every year, and that we NEED new clothes all the time. Due to the way life is at the minute having someone stay at home for the children is a luxury nowadays. I for one don't want someone else i pay to raise my children and for them to get all the "firsts" and for my child to barely recognise me, but thats not an option if i want to live in my house.

If the OP does come back, she probably won't, but i recommend her to view other boards on this site such as the old style board to help her cope for the next few weeks, and to see if her husband is entitled to any benefits such as employment and support allowance. Get the kids involved in trying to save money, make a game out of it. Like take them food shopping and have a competition to see who can find the cheapest pasta sauce or something. Im going to probably get stoned for this but, if when you get down and are eating beans for the 4th night in a row, just fantasise about what your going to do with your back payment.
