I know this is an old thread, but I just wondered if anyone else has noticed a change in the Coop system.

Now, the multisave discount applied on reduced items seems to be limited, so that you don't get the really good deal you used to. For example, reduced fat garlic bread is £1.39, BOGOF. In my local they had them reduced to 93p each. I bought 2, but the multisave reduction was only 93p, whereas it would have been £1.39 in the past. Obviously, this completely changes things in terms of taking advantage of this type of multisave / reduced item combination in the Coop and means no more free food.

This may be specific to my area, which is East Devon.

It all depends on the software being used to set up the deals and how they are managed by admin.
There are two ways of seting up deals First one is by % so by two get second half price is a 50% off the second item, BOGOF is 100% discount.
The other was of seting up the deals is say £1.49 each buy two for £2. the till is told to recoginse this and deduct 98p, Bogof can also be setup in this way. so deducts the full price of the item even though the second one may be reduced.

This is pretty much how I figured it. The point is that they seem to have changed the way the software is set up in my area with the result that the really good deals are a thing of the past.

  • I can now say that for 100% sure, Devon Coop have now changed the way that they calculate multisaves and have eliminated the previous loophole.

Today I got Scotch pancakes which are 79p each or 2 for £1. They were reduced to 59p, so under the old system, buying 2 would have kicked in a 58p reduction and I would have got 2 for 60p. However, I only got an 18p reduction, so I might as well have bought 2 full price packs, as I'd have paid exactly the same. It kind of takes the fun out of it, but there you go.

i noticed this when i used to be a supervisor for the co-op, brought it to the attention of the manager and he didn't want to know, lol. best was when it went down to 75% and you got 2 free items and cash back :D but the new manager at my store has actually put a stop to it now

Yes, some of the staff in our Co-op are nasty about this and get the supervisor involved if the net price is too close to zero (or negative). But most of the time the Co-op is the best place for bargains! :)

haha, i guess i was one of the nice ones! i'd let it go through :D

My co-op seemed to have closed this loophole a few months ago, and certainly I had tried a couple of things without it working. However, today I had a great time as there are a couple of 2 for £4 or £3 offers on meat and it was working again. My best buy was at the end of the day when chicken drumsticks were 50p with 98p off when you bought two packs,:p but I was happy with chicken goujons at the start of the day- £1.99 a pack with £1.98 off when you bought two.
Worth a try- last time it was the same in a number of areas.

I think they have closed part of the loop hole with regards to BOGOFs on reduced items. (exactly as per Sainsburys)

Previously you would buy two 99p items reduced to 50p and only get charged 1p

    2 x 50p = £1 minus 99p (full price bogof discount)

Now it recognises the reduced prices and gives a true discounted bogof

    ie 2 x 50 = £1 minus 50p = 50p (I experienced this twice in the last month)

However when there is a "cash" discount on a multibuy (as per your purchases) it still works (as it still does in Sainsburys)

    So items at £1.50 - buy 2 and save £1 (or buy 2 for £2 - however you want to word it) - work out at 2 x £1.50 = £3 minus £1 multibuy = £2

When the items are reduced to 60p you get a pair of them for 20p

    2 x 60p = £1.20 minus £1 multibuy = 20p

It's "best" if the offer in this particular case is worded as "Buy 2 and save £1" rather than "Buy 2 for £2" and then it is very difficult for anyone to argue over getting the £1 back.
With the latter "offer" you're on "dodgy ground" if you "demand" the £1 refund when your "2 for £2" have only cost you £1.20

I worked for the co-op for 10 years before staying at home with my 2 babies. Sounds as if things haven't changed one bit!!! It was happening way back then, you would think they would have a different system by now??? Haven't been in there for ages .... think it's about time I paid them a visit!!:rotfl:
