It is not only noise that you need to consider.

Please also consider metering (for correct exposure), focusing system for speed and accuracy and quality of lenses.

Handling or ergnomics are also important

You may find that you prefer one camera over another and noise has nothing to do with it.

Wow... my understanding is that these cameras are not very high-end and talking about very minor differences in such details makes them sound like they are for the very professional photographers. From my research the overall difference between the EOS350 and the D50/D70 is very small with one coming slightly on top of the other in different specialised reviews. Practical Photography which I read regularly always puts the EOS350 on top (mainly for noise level and picture quality) and that is why I went for it and have been extremely satisfied since. The buttom line is that they are both really good value for money when it comes to DSLR.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

If you look at Park Cameras

    http://www.parkcameras.com/canon/dig...400d_index.htm

they are listing SRP ("suggested retail price"?) for 400D body only at £650, however if you look at other Canon DSLRs on Park Cameras site their price is typically in the range of 25% to 30% below "SRP". This would suggest Park Cameras may well do 400D body for circa £480?

And Park Cameras are stating "expected mid September 2006" for delivery, not November as suggested elsewhere.

Meanwhile Park Cameras are showing 350D body only at £418 (other sites are showing it at circa £395), I suggest this might be available for circa £350 (or even less) when the 400D is readily available.

    L.S.D. asked

"What lens is available for the 350d that would give equal to 20X telephoto, & what price. Same for 10X."

On a "1.6X Crop" DSLR such as the Canon 350D or 400D a 20X telephoto is achieved by a 600mm lens and a 10X telephoto is achieved by a 300mm lens.

Point and Shoot Digital Cameras and Digicams have got consumers used to such vast "telephoto" multiples as 10X and 20X but with significant loss in image quality.

People rarely use anything approaching 20X on DSLRs except for very specialised (and most often professional) uses such as sports or wild-life photography. For example Canon do a very nice 600mm lens which will set you back about £5,800 - which is what you often see as a long "off white lens" around football grounds etc - oh it does weigh 5.36 kg and is 456mm long.

As for 10X you will find a variety of lenses including various zooms e.g. 75-300mm zoom. But "you get what you pay for" and their is a vast premium for quality; e.g. you can get a Canon zoom 75-300mm zoom which will exceed (or at least be on par with) your typical Canon Point & Shoot camera for £180, up to £3,300 for a Canon 300 mm lens of the same quality as the 600mm lens discussed above.

If you want to see a review of various Canon lenses suggest you go to

    Hope this helps.

waterstar. Thanks very much. I've got a 10X zoom Panasonic & I love it to bits.
But I looked at the 350 the other day to go with the Panasonic or maybe the 400 when it is out. My problem is I want more telephoto & 20 Xs would be great. What about a 10X & a 2X converter with the 75-300mm zoom. The 20X is too dear for the OH. I like taking pictures of planes etc, so a large telephoto would be best for me.
    Nice to save.

Seems like the Canon 350D has less noise.

And from the graphs it seems the Canon 350D has less noise at ISO 1600. :)

SNipped for space on the thread:beer:

That's the first time I've heard that anywhere, not that I doubt your sources.

Looking at the noise perfomance though, the 350 only edges it at 1600 and is noisier throughout the range, which arguably is more important as you'll be wanting to shoot ISO200 most often I would expect>

Practical Photography did a head to head of these a couple of months back and had the D50 out in front, so it just goes to show...

Ofcourse Park cameras actually only puts $20 (OK I don't have a british keyboard - I'm on holiday) between the price of a 350D and a 400D

If that holds true then for $500 I'd expect to get the 400D with lens - though it might just be wishful thinking. If that happens I'd be extremely tempted. Also it's enough to stop me paying over $450 for a 350D now.

I'll happily wait for a month or so and see what happens.

I've been wanting a 350 since they first came out - and they were less than $500 then, so unless I'm missing something I definately wouldn't be forking out this kind of money so close to the release of a better camera without waiting for another month or so.
