please help partner refused dole

I work full time earning £21k plus overtime and my partner who was self employed is out of work.
The dole office have refused him any money because I work however our joint bills i.e., mortgage, loans, credit cards, utilities which are in both our names falls back on me to pay, only problem is I dont earn enough to support both of us. Can anybody please tell me whether this is right?
I am not hoping for a lot of money from the government just a little to help pay for food etc.
Because work has been scarce my partner hasnt had enough money to pay his tax and NI for last year however I know the benefits agency are not refusing him dole because of this as a few years ago when he was made redundant after paying nI and tax contributions for over two years he was refused then also because I am working. It seems very unfair, we are not married and I dont believe in the eyes of the law I should support him, even though I do because I love him. we have no savings.
We have arrears (3 months) on one loan but everything else is paid up to date. The bank (re loan) have asked us to go to citizen advice - can anybody please help. I am working myself into the ground with the overtime to help us out and my partner is slowing slipping into depression. I would be grateful for all comments. many thanks

Apparently that is right, as a friend of mine had exactly the same problem when her husbands work 'driedup', he was also self employed. They had to survive on her wages, but he did work with agencies anywhere and doing anything he could just to help make ends meet. Good luck x:EasterBun

Yes its right my partner only earns £15000 a year and all i can claim is carers allowance, the law states what you are able to live on as a couple and you will find its around £110 a week if i am wrong someone tell me you do not state if you have children or not:AAutism isn't the end of the world just a journey to another one:A0

It's £102 ish for a couple whereby there are no children or disabilities involved. (although, I think the first £10 is ignored?)
OP - unless your partner has paid enough NI in the last 2 tax years, he cna only claim income based JSA if your income is low enough.
The figure I (and Keanefan) quoted are without rent, council tax and mortgage.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

It is correct and in the eyes of the law you are expected to support him as you are treated as a couple (which you are) for benefit purposes.
Even if he had paid his NI self-employed class 2 conts they do not count towards contribution based JSA.0 -
hello daisychainmaker, keanefan10 and sh1305
many thanks for your replies though i was hoping you were wrong !!
I am going to take time off work next week to see citizen advice and break our fixed mortgage (which apr is too high - fixed at wrong time) and see if I can go interest only. I went to citizen advice when my partner was made redundant and the lady i spoke to was a cow. none of the companies we owed money to heard from her and she was supposed to be writing them letters. she was very condescending towards me and I came out worse than I went in !! I am going to try another area this time hopefully will end up with somebody I can talk to.
My other half has signed on all the agencies but nothing is out there. I didnt believe him so I started searching the internet and its true - he is a driver. I even went onto all the supermarket websites to see if there are any shelf stackers wanted but nothing? I have told him might be best to walk in and ask in person just in case. Just feels horrible I know the country is not great at the moment but just cant believe there is nothing out there. I have also sent off lots of applications for apprenticeships.. we are trying but getting nowhere and him watching me working 6 days a week is not doing him any good...
i know it will get better just hanging in for that day.0 -
It will be right as he will not be entitiled to Income Based JSA due to your earnings. I suggest that you seek help from free Debt Counselling Agency's such as Consumer Credit Counselling/Pay plan/CAB as they will help set up payment plans with Bank/loans etc.Dont go to one that charges for this Do this sooner rather than later as although painful it is worth it in long run as you will sleep a lot easier.Take care0

Have you tried the online agencies too like Monster.com and jobsite.com. I found CCCS.com absolutely brilliant when I had financial problems, no condecending (I soo can't spell) twazzocks there, just really helpful understanding people x:EasterBun

many thanks Stephlou - just read your post and great minds work alike eh?
I just feel a little ashamed specially when I see all my friends, family and work colleagues doing so well. its been going on a while and because of it I am distancing myself so i dont have to talk to them or explain, which is silly cos I know that they wouldnt judge me. my parents said they were in the same boat when i was young so they understand but still feels a little shameful..
Going to ring the bank on tuesday bout the loan - i was thinking of offering them £100 a month to keep them happy (should be £355) and then visit CA one day next week hopefully work will let me a take half a days holiday. fingers crossed0 -
hiya daisychain
Funny enough CCCS are what the bank told me to contact so I'll give them a go stead of CA. I have tried Monster and jobsmine. I found a couple of jobs unsure what job sites as trawled through them all but heard nothing back. on the plus side just checked my email and apprenticeships org are asking my partner to call them - heres praying !!0 -
Healy is correct here - Class 2 NIC's are not taken into account for JSA(C) and he isnt entitled to anything given the circumstances. It is correct and in the eyes of the law you are expected to support him as you are treated as a couple (which you are) for benefit purposes.
