We have an Asda but it is quite a drive away, taking petrol into account it isn't worth it for just the weekly shop. Also found their smart range stuff I'm not that keen on! My choices within walking/easy drive distance are Tesco, Budgens, Sainsburys and soon to be LidlRiding out the receession.........0 -
Lidl rocks, it was my main supermaket for a couple of years (until discovering R&R
) and it's fantastic stack 'em high/sell 'em cheap concept.
Be prepared to climb over the odd crate every now and again for those great savings lol.0 -
I'm a Lidl convert too. I was too 'stuck up' before LBM, but now I'm a loud and proud Lidl shopper - even happy to be seen with one of their carrier bags (which you have to pay for btw)
My top recommendations:
Coffee.
Biscuits and cakes - lots of lovely German delicacies, esp at Christmas.
Anything made of chocolate - their bitter dark chocolate, which I use for cooking & baking, is the cheapest of anyones and fabulous quality.
Jars of pesto, pickled cornichons and antipasti.
Anything from the deli counter - cheeses, ham, salami, yoghurt etc.
Their 'own brand butter' - it's just like Lurpak.
Bags of Walnut halves and jars of runny honey to put on my HM yoghurt for brekky Mmmmm Yum.
Ice cream - everything I've tried has been great. The Magnum lookalikes are divine and 6 in a box for £1.79.
Any of their cleaning products, laundry powder etc.
If you have a couple of hours to spend, there is a very long thread in the shop don't drop board entitled What to buy/ not to buy at Lidl/ Aldi /Netto, which makes interesting reading. Here's a link:

Where else are you going to find extra virgin olive oil at £1.89 a litre?!
We do most of our shopping at Lidl and then go to Asda for the things that Lidl don't stock.[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0 -

Lidle website is brilliant - they will even give you a route map if you enter your postcode.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.

I could walk to Asda from here and be inside it in six minutes (yes, I've timed it - I really *am* that sad
) and regard it as my local (massive!) corner shop. I'd rather walk ten or fifteen minutes further to Lidl though.
Their food may be marginally more expensive than the Asda Smart Price range sometimes, but it's equal (and often superior to) the quality of the Asda standard range. The only stuff of Lidls I've disliked has been the potato salad and the baked beans, and I think that their instant coffee (the tall square jar with the black lid) is actually better than Nescafe. As for the big white pots of yoghurt they've started doing with the grated chocolate type bits in... mmmmmm : )
The place even featured on my 'wants' list when we moved house recently - 'I've got to close to family, within the school catchment area for the kids... and near to Lidl!'Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
Do Lidl do any organic food?0

If LIDL and ALDI have done nothing else, they have returned the choice that we used to enjoy befor the big supermarket chains killed off the smaller traders. By selective shopping - certain things at Aldi, others at Lidl, Tesco,Sainsbury's etc. we are going back to what we did before the glitter of out of town superstores seduced us all, by luring us in with loss leaders, then fleecing us of every penny.
Thanks Lidl, Thanks AldiI am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.

Not in the UK yet - in Germany they have introduced organic/fair trade/free from ranges and it make come over here soon.
I think Aldi have introduced a small organic range in the UK.0
