Lidl vs Tesco......

Hi all,

Really struggling with grocery budget, currently shop at Tesco (other option in our town is Sainsburys.... however.........just driven throguh town and there is a sign up on a development site saying they are building a Lidl. Is this cheaper than Tesco or similar? Also for those of you well known to both what are the especially good deals to look out for at Lidl?

  • I LOVE Lidl! I actually prefer most of their foods. They are definitely cheaper for most things.

For example, we used to spend around £60 every fortnight, now we only spend about £30!!!! I feel I can still treat myself and don't feel too bad ie. getting some lovely Stilton today mmmm....

I have heard tell of bread being given away free in some shops at end of day too!

Not sure about Tesco, but I save 18-20% shopping at Lidl rather than Sainsburys.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

we use Lidl every week. We eat well and spend much less. I can highly recommend their quality bread half the price of tesco or anywhere else, fresh chickens at £1.77, veg/fruit regularly reduced and high quality as well as the special offers. There is a down side, take your own carrier bags or use boxes as there is a charge for their bags, and dont expect the courtesy and help you would get from main stream stores. Having said that i have nothing but good to say about Lidl, look out for Aldi's as well they are a bit more more up market than Lidl but still very cheap. Personally i avoid Netto's but thats just personal choice

Oops - you asked about good deals too. Lidl's dry cure bacon is the best I've come across as well as the cheapest. Their rice, pasta, canned goods, toiletries and cleaning stuff are cheap and good quality, and their tomato ketchup is excellent.

Yea! I'm soooooo excited now! :j Quite worrying what becomes exciting in the life of a DFW nerd! Probably won't be open for some months so think i'm gonna use that time to make note of the costs of all of the things I buy reguarly at Tesco, so that I can really discover the savings! :D

  • I totally agree.I wouldn't buy loo roll anywhere else! Also great are bin bags 99p really good quality and thick, kitchen roll, fruit juices and mozzarella (28p!) The apricot bathroom cleaner is 99p and smells delicious! (cleans very well too!) Their moisturiser is £1.99 a pot and is just as good as any "quality" moisturiser i've tried. Happy shopping!

One thing I forgot to mention is that you can only pay with cash or debit card, not cheque. And you're right about the loo rolls, davek1 - how could I have forgotten!

Hopefully yours will be open by Christmas as they do great turkeys, and wonderful Stollen around Christmas for much cheaper than you could buy the ingredients and make your own - dunno how they do it. I was given an alleged 'luxury' Stollen from Sainsbury's last Christmas and it hardly had any marzipan in it compared with my Lidl's one, which cost about £1.

If you like, or cook with, bitter chocolate the big bars of 70% cocoa solids stuff cost about 60p each!

Also, they do those lovely iced ginger biscuits that you get on the continent ... the kids and I love those.

I think I must be hungry!
