I have epilepsy so cannot work in that sort of environment. I also applied for call centres and cannot get a job there due to not having a good credit rating. Been looking at all the shops and online, eg the council's website for jobs in the local museums or library etc...0 -
If there is a large shopping centre near you have a walk round every 2 or 3 days there are on ocassions jobs still advertised in shop windows0

Hotel bar work is very lucrative at this time of year (wedding season and there'll be the odd other function as well). I did that for a few years during summer breaks from uni and the hotel I worked in was desperate for bar staff, as once the wait staff hit 18 most of them quit before they could be trained to work on the bar.
If you're prepared to do early mornings then it might also be worth looking at housekeeping/cleaning jobs.
ETA: Finally, if you're only working in uni holidays, make sure you get your P38(S) - available on HMRC website - filled in so you don't pay tax on your earnings."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
Your university should have a careers service... they should have a load of internships, vacation jobs and part-time work. Ours is very good and because we're out in the country there's lots of manual labour digging bulbs for flower growers or gutting fish in the nearest fish market...The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. Otherwise, you are bound to lose a truck, sooner or later. Source: Sergio Cha
I'm sorry for the demon I've become but you should be sorry for the angel you are not.0 -
I found that as soon as it got to around June time when all the uni students were leaving, my shopping centre had a lot of vacancies come up. They had an online page or I could pick up a vacancy list at the shopping centre itself0

hi all,
Sorry - i've just realised that I never did pop back to say thank-you for all of the replies!
I was very lucky on the job front in the end! Sent my CV out to some recruitment agencies on the Monday (I went through all of the agencies on yell and sent my CV on spec rather than applying directly for advertised positions) and started a job for the duration of the summer on the Wednesday! It's only working in a very quiet reception, but tbh honest it's a welcomed change of pace!
thank-you for all of the ideas - I'll likely be looking for something again next summer when my probation is over, so I'll bear all of that in mind again then!

I gave up trying to get a job. Applied with a teaching agency who couldn't get me anything so i wasted £36 for a crb for nothing. Now just volunteering at a local school for more experience (i'm training to be a teacher) and will then just have to make the last of my loan last me until september.Saved: £1566.53/ £20000

The £36 on the CRB isn't wasted if it means you are gaining experience in school. You wouldn't be allowed to volunteer without a valid CRB.
I work for a supply agency (I am also training to be a teacher) as a supply teaching assistant and have been quite lucky with getting work when I want it.0 -

Have you considered doing something outside of teaching just on a temp basis if money's tight?
I've just finished my teacher training (different situation to you probably as I'm in Scotland), and i'm working in a reception over the summer just to get some extra pocket money to tide me over. Although the volunteering in the school is much better experience - your course must be very different to ours, we were either at uni or in school on placement while the schools were in session so wouldn't have been able to pick up work in a school anyway!
Connologs is right, the CRB check is not necessarily a waste, you just never know what is going to come up! lots of positivity and a bit of (tempered) aggression goes a long way - hound the life out of the agency - and every other you can get yourself registered with!
Oh - not sure if this is bum advice given the situation is different up here, but have you tried local colleges and further education establishments? It might be worth speccing your CV to them, you might be lucky and even get a night school or something you could teach at?
good luck with it anyway!!0 -

It was as I can't use the CRB i got for the agency at the school i'm at (all very confusing) but my mom works at the school i'm volunteering at so I have to have a local council CRB which i'd got from work a few years ago so i can use that, I wouldn't have been allowed to volunteer there with the agency CRB as i'm not at the school through them, it's something i've set up myselfSaved: £1566.53/ £20000
