Hey girls and guys,
I'm just about to finish my PGDE and will be starting my years probation in August.
I'm really skint in the meantime though - does anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking for a summer job?
I did a few days temping over the easter break, so I'll try that again, but since there's probably so much more competition I just wondered if anyone else had any other suggestions?

With the current economic situation you need to be looking absolutely everywhere.

Restaurants and bars always seem to be hiring as the staff turnover is relatively bad.
Other than that, if you live in a nice area with lots of retired people maybe worth considering gardening. I do it for my granny over the summer. Only on hot days, £9.50 an hour plus don't have to pay tax on it. Her house is in a few acres so there's always something to do.
I've not done it for anyone else but I'd imagine lots of older people could do with some help in the garden and probably would pay you fairly generously for a few hours a week. Also, word of mouth could see then recommending you to their friends and, generalising heavily here, most older people have an interest in gardening so have all the tools you'll just need some wellies and heavy duty gardening gloves.0 -
Ask in the job centre about agencies.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Virtual sealed pot #178 £80.250 -
If theres no competition I would recommend cleaning Windows. Some people in rural areas and on ocassion the town can get up to and around £40 and if you can apply any skills from your course and become almost self employed that's a bonus.
I also agree with the earlier post that bars are always looking but watch out as they do try and diddle you on occasion especially with tipping, I remember a friend was happy working for a weatherspoons and i'm not sure if it's all but he was recieving a good portion of tips with other staff.
Other than that I would say the retail sector is becoming a waste of time unless your happy with a low wage (although not all jobs). Supermarkets are always happy to take on gap year students especially Tesco's and pay fairly handsomsly depending on store but normally £6.50+ on weekdays and I think Asda's around the same.
I looked for a job for months during my year out since last sep. What a waste of time, just got a temp job, left jobs out of poor management and other such things. Best of luck, hope that's helped. Will watch the posts as i'll see what others can suggest.

I'm surprised by how few consider summer placement schemes, nearly all large companies offer them. The application deadlines are normally quite early e.g. January time for start in July and they tend to be long processes. It's useful not only financially but educationally, especially if you get a placement related to the area you want to work in. I'll be earning over £4,000 this summer on such schemes.0

Do you have any pointers as to where/how to find placements? I've thus far been unable to find anything to even apply for!! Might be useful for me to use for next academic year if nothing else.:D0 -

Are there any bars/nightclubs near you? They tend to have high turnover off staff, as do call centers? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
