Is it just a coincidence that we bought a rotten chicken from an Aldi in Manchester, and it too was rancid (although in date).

On the flipside, I've bought 7 chickens a week from Aldi for the past 3 years for my dog and not one of them has been off.

I've had 'off' produce from stores all over the price spectrum. Sometimes the seal on packaging can be compromised or a refridgeration unit suddenly goes on the blink. It happens; I get a refund and move on.

I did not say anything about rotten carcasses slipping through, but in todays way of production/supplying supermarkets/packaging/travelling long distances it IS inevitable things like this can happen. If you really want to avoid the potential of this grow (and slaughter!) your own!
Things can, and do, go rancid on the shelf, and although there should be people checking these things nothing is 100% proof!

True, (although I have to say I have not accused you of doing so), but when it comes to something as dangerous as rotten chicken, I have to say I am very choosy, for example I have so far NEVER had a rotten chicken from Tesco, however should the day arise, you can bet on it that I would never buy a chicken from them again - should eventuality conclude that every store or chain I have been to has sold me a rotten chicken - THEN I may consider buying from a farm, if that fails, short of building my own coop, I would avoid chicken at all costs.

Mistakes like this should NEVER happen, its one thing to mistakenly leave outdated food on a shelf, a completely different matter to pass it off as "in date" or "fresh".

Whatever the excuses for the mistake, I class it as serious a breach as a restaurant "accidentally" serving mouse droppings or dead roaches with the food, by mistakenly forgetting to adhere to strict hygiene rules.

I would NEVER buy a chicken (or possibly meat produce) from Aldi as a direct result of purchasing an "in dated" yet potentially dangerous "rancid" chicken from them, the risks are too high, suppose I had a cold and not noticed the stench, this "unacceptable mistake", could cost me much more than a ticky tummy. If a Supermarket can make such a mistake as this, I wont take any unnecessary risks.

While I do understand where you are coming from I just don't think it is possible to avoid every shop that has made some sort of food hygiene error at one point- I bet they all have, or if not have had near misses! Of course if a certain branch or a certain shop clearly is flouting hygiene laws they should be avoided, and more importantly, reported!
