The way sony are going, you won't be able to use it as a blu-ray player soon :p

Just look at the amount of (useful!) features they have removed in both hardware and software revisions.

    Most people:
    • Don't want to run Linux on a PS3
    • Don't want to play SACD
    • Don't want to play PS2 games

So what am I missing out on?

Gone back in favour of the xbox !! it will be used to play games (no surprises) with some odd days online gaming when younger relatives visit us.
i will not be using ps3 bluray we allready have this, so just out and out gaming with the replies (thanks) its xbox then.

Based on posts in this thread choosing xbox over ps3 means
-£40 for wireless adaptor for wireless networking
-approx £28 per year for online play (probably more if it's for "odd days")

Cost to buy xbox 360 elite from Play.com - £190
    cost to buy ps3 from play.com - £270

means that in year one the xbox 360 will cost at least £258 compared to ps3 £270.
    Year 2 xbox will be £258+online subscription of £28(min) = £286.
year 2 ps3 will still be £270 since the online is free.

year 3 add another £28(min) for xbox live - £314
    year 3 ps3 - still £270.

and so on and so on.

Personally I'd go for the ps3 - I don't play ps2 games on mine but if younger relatives were coming to visit they may have the ps2 games and they can be used.

PS3 was also released about 18months behind xbox 360 meaning it'll probably be replaced about 18months after xbox. Based on that it means the xbox 360 games will be superseded 18months before the ps3. I know they may play on the newer console but the question has already been asked "why would I play ps2 games on a ps3 console?". Same question will crop up when next generation of consoles is released.

    You can't play PS2 games on a new PS3.

Just to add, in terms of hifi quality the PS3 wins. It has an awesome upscaler for dvds etc beating dvd/bluray players worth a lot more money. Is 'deep colour' capable (Although very very few things actually use this at the moment). Handles hidef sound as well as video. Sound quality rivals some hifi cd players etc etc
Sure the 360 wins on games, but the PS3 wins on quality

It was also thought that the PS3 couldnt handle 360 games due to them always performing more inferior. This tide is slowly changing. Ive heard many reports of games now running better on PS3. The days of poor ports due to sloppy programming is coming to an end

The XBox 360 upscales DVDs and MP3 playback is better on the 360 than the PS3. The PS3 MP3 playback sound is flat.

The reason the PS3 has more problems with games is that the developers have said it is a pig to write software for so they're not as easy to optimise for performance as they are for the 360. The SDK is apparently horrendous compared to the SDK that Microsoft punt out. Also with Microsoft, Joe Public can get a stripped down SDK for free and create their own games.

INdeed. The only way to play them is on the first generation model I have and even then, it was only two of the range that had PS2 backwards compatibility.
