I don't know how the bonuses work, never having needed to, but I'm afraid that in the subjects he's chosen he is pretty much an A* student. :o He IS working, but probably not as much as his teachers like to think he is ...

    Oooh lucky boy!

You should be proud to say that - if his mum can't brag about him then who can? :p

Aren't the bonuses set to ability?

So each student should have to put the same effort in, even if the grade they need to achieve is lower?

Unless they are naturally a grade A* student, I guess, and would not need to work hard, even to achieve that grade.

The student has to sign a form saying that they will attend classes, do work etc, and each week the school has to say whether or the pupil should get the EMA or not. So, if you just sit about and do nothing all day then you won't get it. At least, that's the way it's meant to work.

I was pointing out that lots of people work hard all their lives BUT they are not as fortunate as your family has been. And that is often NOT about how hard they have worked. There is often an assumption that people who receive benefits such as this, do so because they have somehow not worked as hard as those who are well off. But this is not a meritocratic society!

why are you going to Greggs every day and spending £15-20 a week?

yeah i totally see your point but i never said that people who do recieve ema are people with parents who dont work hard i was just saying that my parents have and havent getting their life handed to them on a plate if you get me? as i have an family member who will most definately recieve ema but is also one of the hardest working people i know so that was what i meant.
Any yeah about the meal deal at greggs this is true if you want to sit on the street in the rain and freezing cold whilst eating your food...they add about £1.50 to the price just to sit in and if there was another place to go trust me i would...roll on the summer. And i do take lunches somedays as I have to work through my dinner sometimes, it all depends and the food in college is really really rubbish worse than my other school. I also never said i was 'finacially struggling' i was pointing out that a college student in any household does have pull on any income with some exceptions.
Maybe schemes for hitting predicted grades or something along those lines could be used in addition maybe:confused: just a thought.

It seemed to be the same in my 6th form. I didn't know of a single person getting £10 or £20 it was £30 or nothing. I got nothing as my parents income was a couple of thousand over the limit.

I think EMA is a good idea even though when I was at school I never really saw people use it for the reason it was intended. The bit I disagree with though is the bonus part. They should either open this up to everyone or scrap it.
  • My daughter's bonus came through this week and the following is the letter she got...

I refer to your award for an Education Maintenance Allowance.

Your tutor has confirmed that you have kept to the terms of your Learning Agreement particularly regarding attendance (she has 100%) and progress.

In view of this I am pleased to say that you have been awarded an EMA Bonus for £150 that should have taken value in your bank account by the time you receive this letter.
  • Why would someone get an EMA Bonus of £100 instead of 150, could it be an error because attendence is 100% & grades are good, any info would be appreciated as school's closed for HT.
  • i only got £100

    anyone else get £150?

    :O

  • I did wonder if I should put in the amount as I'm not sure if every area gets the same? Or could it depend on the weekly amount received?
