right ok i'd already installed that yesterday and now i've deleted the others0

right ok now it opens in media player classic- says it's about to play but then pauses itself with the cursor that moves across as time goes on right at the end- pressing play doesn't do anything and moving the timing cursor thing doesn't work either- although it does say the longer time??0

It could be DivX, Cinepak, MPEG-4, etc among others.
What are you talking? XviD CoDec will play both DivX and MPEG-4 video. I don't know about Cinepak...but what are the chances?0 -

I told you what you should do.... there are just too many cooks..... and too many CoDecs.
Uninstall all and just install the XviD Codec I suggested. Have you run the Malware scan?
If you downloaded the thing via a torrent, it may be that the download is not yet complete.0 -
no it's not via torrent - download is complete- i've run a malware scan all good
right ok i've unistalled all and kept the k-lite one
so now i should unistall and get the xvid one again
and in theory... once i have this ...then what? i just try and play it again?0 -

I think telling you twice is more than enough....0 -
Bundled with the K-lite codec pack is an application called "GSpot Codec Information Appliance". What this does is analyse any video file to establish what codec's it needs, whether they are installed, and can also test playback of the file to hopefully work out whats going wrong. It can also identify if the file itself is corrupted.
If you are still having problems it might be an idea to run GSpot and open the video file you've downloaded, and post a screenshot of what it shows when the file is loaded. Can't guarantee anything but might give us an idea of what the problem is.
To save a screenshot from a program, press Alt + PrintScreen to copy the application window to the clipboard. You can then "paste" the screenshot into Paint etc. and save it. You'd need to upload the file of the screenshot to somewhere like https://www.tinypic.com and post a link to it.0 -
