  • That's great, Ashamed. Keep up the good work and you'll be all paid off in no time. :)
  • Thank you so much for letting us know how you have gotten on. I read loads of SOAs on here, and then all the advice, but it's brilliant to see someone summarising how all that advice worked out.

It's amazing how much money we all threw away just by not realising where to get things cheaper. I reckon the whole country is financed by people like us paying for things we didn't need.

    Thanks from another London dweller.
  • Hi Ashamed,

it's brilliant to read your update. I have just subscribed to this thread so I hope you will keep posting.
I need to read through the whole lot as I have needed to get a hold on my spending and debt for years now. I was into this site a few years ago but then just went back to my old ways.
Thanks for sharing your experience, it's very inspiring.

Thanks all for the kind words. I'll probably only put an update every 6 months on this one.

If you want to subscribe to my Diary (link in my sig below) I update that with monthly figures and also post on it fairly frequently.

Well done. What a difference just:-

Living the life you can afford

If everyone did that debt would be a thing of the past.

  • 3 month update...

A few more changes since November.
We reviewed our mortgage protection plan and traded it in for dual life insurance with critical illness cover. We decided to do this as I have been with my company for 17 years now and the redundancy package is pretty good. Works out about 3 years pay with the first 30k being tax free. This has saved us £40 a month.
We are now getting our 15 hours free nursery a week, this is a massive saving of £188 a month. We are also doing Childcare vouchers saving another £1500 a year in tax ( hello family holiday ).

Apart from the financial changes, we have also made some lifestyle changes. Myself and my wife put on a fair bit of weight since our daughter was born. We have been loosing weight since my last post. We are doing pretty good chipping away at those extra pounds. Myself I'm down from 16st 13lbs to 15st 4lbs with lots more to come. I've also started running around 15km a week which is a surprise as previously I was too fat to run.

So in summary, looking good, feeling great!!
We hope to smash through the £15k paid off in 1 year as I previously hoped all the way back in May 2010.

Thanks to this site and everyone on the forum for all your advise and input. Also to all those in the same boat, keep your chin up and just keep chipping away. If you hit a rock with a hammer long enough it will crack.
