£380 charge for going over BT broadband monthly usage?

Im posting this on behalf of a friend of mine, she has BT internet with a 20gb monlthy usage and within the last 2 months her 13 year old son has used an extra 380gb.

She was told BT charge £1 per gb extra when you go over your limit, i understand this is fair up untill a point, but considering she could have unlimited usage for £30 a month how can they justify £380? 380gb i excessive and her son has had a telling off, i just find this to be very harsh, she dosent use the internet her self and recived no warning that her son had gone over their montly usage. chances are she hasnt got a leg to stand on but i thought i would ask on here if anybody thinks she could somehow appeal agaisnt the charges, i agree a charge should be paid but £380? i feel thats a little harsh.

If it's £1 per mb this seems fair - it may not have been your friend who used the bandwidth, but as account owner it is their responsibility to be in control of the account and it's use.

Just got done for it myself for 2 notes. They get around this by saying they sent yu a warning to which I argued we did not receive one and they said they sent one to the email address account they created when the broadband account was setup and not the primary email address given at the time.

I think for £380 though I would fight a lot harder to find a way out f it but £32 is a lesson learnt and we are moving to Virgin now after a offer in simplify digital so BT have lost out now anyway

She could start by asking BT to provide a copy of the agreement that she signed and then see what they come up with, you will be suprised when big companies like this are challenged they sometimes are unable to produce agreements etc.

How about she rings them up and asks them that initially then report back here and we will take it from there!

    They really take the pi$$

How can you check how much you've used anyway? I'm worried now because my kids are always on facebook our youtube - would that eat up into an allowance?

Youtube and iplayer eat into the allowance.
I'm on the basic 10 gb package for the next few months, usually get an e mail around the 29th to say I'm near the limit and why not upgrade(no thanks),I dont go over though as I have networx installed on both Pc and laptop, and do a bit of iplayer watching on the last day to push it to the 10gb.
    I hate BT.

Hi, i have just given her a call, she dosent actualy recall signing anything, but i have told her to ring up BT and ask for a copy of the agreement she signed.

If the agreement dosent mention the £1 per GB what would this mean?

Which will make no difference as you are not required to.

SHE isresponsible for her son's usage. If she cannot take charge then either the son should pay or she should not have it.
