Anyone having/had afternoon tea for reception?

Was thinking of having afternoon tea at a local hotel who do afternoon teas anyway (cream tea and sandwiches affair) and was wondering what I should have?

Also if anyone has had one before, how much were you charged, and what did you have? How was it served? Buffet?

We've been quoted roughly £10 per head to include use of the function room, but haven't gone into details yet - it's just a rough idea. Is this a good price?

I quite fancy a high tea myself. It reminds me of going to my Scottish great grandparents house and granny would start laying out the table with lots of yummy food, cakes, home-made scones and home-made strawberry jam. Its what i want so will watch your thread with interest.

We are having a Cream Tea and drinks reception immediately after the church service. As we are getting married late in the afternoon I figured everyone will have had lunch so its just really to keep them going til the evening buffet which starts at 7.30. We are being charged £4.90 per head but thats just for the Cream Tea (scones, cream, jam and unlimited tea!) but it is very substantial :).

The hotel owner thought it was a fantastic idea and said no-one has ever done it before. As she also owns a traditional tea shop as well I think she will be suggesting it to others too!

We are having afternoon tea! We wanted a later wedding and thought about afternoon tea because we liked the idea of a cup of tea, sarnie and a cake...and it's cheaper lol.

We are paying £14.95 per person, which is more expensive than a few other places but the hotel is lovely and I know it will be nice and served properly (and its only for 30 anyway). We had a quote from another venue, but they just guessed about £8 per head as they had never done it before, and I didn't think it was going to be as nice. So, (to sexymouse) if the venue is nice and they quoted £10 a head, I would say thats good myself.

ive bene quoted £21 a head for a lovely vegetarian/ vegan afternoon tea with tons of lovely treats (not standard stuff). But venue costs and food and service charge means its a bit over our budget and its a bit too far from our house :( emailed 5 other options this week stating I would prefer afternoon tea or buffet selections and so far they have all replied with formal meal options which is not what i want at all :((((

Im seriously considering aftrnoon tea for mine, with a hog roast n buffet in the evening. Its nice to think out of the box :) I looked at some of the wedding menus in hotels and thought its a bit too posh for me and my lot! I dont really like formal. I'll be watching this thread!

We're having The Marvellous Tea Dance company cater our evening reception, they're amazing ladies who travel round all the vintage events with the most scrumptious cakes and sandwiches! They're also doing a bit of entertainment and the decorating of our venue. We're quoted at £6 a head for that :)

We're thinking about having Afternoon Tea - we're having a late ceremony at the registry office and didn't really see the point in feeding everybody twice, but I still wanted a formal "sit down" part of the day for speeches etc so thought a High Tea would be a nice way of doing things with a BBQ later on for everyone to help themselves!!

My mother rolled her eyes at the idea saying that people would be hungry and expect a proper meal(!!) so we're going to state on the invitations that the reception will be high tea followed by a BBQ later on. I'm sure that people would eat beforehand anyway as the ceremony will be about 3pm, but if it keeps her quiet...!

Have been quoted £10 per head for the afternoon tea and £12 per head for the BBQ, but as we haven't actually booked anything yet I'm still shopping around! Will also look at The Marvellous Tea Dance Co as I don't mind having different caterers for the different parts of the day! Thanks for the link mellymeep - that sounds like a great price! x

Just a wee thing to watch out for... It might just be a regional thing - but here afternoon tea is tea with small sandwiches, scones & cakes etc and high tea is tea with a proper meal (often fish & chips) with bread and butter, scones and cakes (i.e. loads of food!).
It doesn't matter for the caterers as long as you've checked a menu of what they are going to serve, but it might for guests. If I was told to expect high tea I wouldn't eat much before I went, but for afternoon tea I'd make sure I'd a decent lunch before I went.

We thought about this too, given our location! But decided against it and on ice-cream instead between the late lunch and evening buffet then late supper of pasties as a 'tea'.
