I am a die hard apple fan and i have always maintained that for me to give up my iPhone (2G) you would need to prise it from my cold dead fingers, however i am very tempted by the HTC Desire! Especially that half the people in my office have that phone! However I'm hoping that Steve Jobs will showcase a new iPhone to make me stay with Apple.......

OP, if I am measuring the tone of your posts correctly, you'd like an iPhone and if the option was a free 3Gs or a free Desire, you'd go for the 3Gs. I also think you feel that if you don't get the iPhone, you are worried that you'll regret it.

If that's the case, see if you can wait for the announcement of the new iPhone then ask your operator whether they'll give you the 3Gs for free (or spend the extra and go for the new one).
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

iPhone 3G is an old phone and personally I'd definitely choose the Desire, which is a much better phone AND cheaper because Apple overprice a lot. Drop one level to a Legend, which is a bit slower processor (same speed as 3GS) but better looking than the Desire, and you can save a lot of money vs an iPhone.

OTOH a 3GS isn't so far behind in many ways that matter. Close enough that if you're really sold on the whole iPhone thing I suggest finding a 3GS deal or waiting until the 3GS price drops.

PS. yes a iPod touch is basically same as an iPhone but can't make calls. I'm not entirely sure why you'd want any iPod if you already have a smartphone, maybe a plain one to drop into the docks and all that but not the expensive Touch. If you'd seriously be thinking of getting a Touch + Desire or just a 3GS then the 3GS is the obvious choice (probably cheaper too).

Maybe worth waiting a month then and get a free 3GS.

Thats unlikely, on the lower tarrifs

Apple will drop the prices but not make them free unless you prepaired to pay £45 plus per month. Apple don't want the iPhone selling too cheap as it will cut into ipod touch sales.

The iphone is for fans of pop music. The Desire is more your progressive rock hippy phone :)

DO NOT touch the iPhone 3G go for 3Gs minimum as apple will no longer be supporting anything older than 3Gs after about the end of June due to the 3G and older not being able to run the new 4.0 software.

I have had an HTC Touch HD2 which I,ve had for about 3 months. Absolutely brilliant phone - not cheap but fast and easy to use

    Source?
due to the 3G and older not being able to run the new 4.0 software.

Wrong. The 3G just won't have some of the more resource hungry features such as multitasking.

Ring apple that is my source and how I found out when I was considering a cheap 3G last week, they told me they will only fully support 3Gs upwards after the new upgrade, anything below you take the chance but they cannot guarantee any apps or upgraded functions on older models.

Which is virtually the entire 4.0 upgrade.

You can't provide a source then. There is a huge difference between not supporting a device (which is what you said), and not supporting new apps on an older device.
Which is virtually the entire 4.0 upgrade.

The 100 or so other changes and improvements must be my imagination then.
