When looking at a new car I have the option of darkened windows - something I had never thought about having.

What are the advantages of darkened windows?

Or does it just say the owner is a self centred arrogant pr*t?

Reflect the heat keeping the car cooler, also aids privacy.

Makes personal belongings inside the car less visible, so the car is less likely to be broken into (I believe that this can in some cases lower insurance a little bit).

Only the rear windows can, legally, be darkened so that they transmit less then 70% of the ambient light. The front windows can only be darkened so that they still transmit at least 70% of the amient light - many cars are fitted with windows already tinted to this level.

I don't think I would order a car without darkened glass. As others have said it keeps the car slightly cooler, but the main benefit is security of possessions. I've had to transport brand new laptops once from one office to another and was happier in the knowledge that no-one could see the boxes.

Great for ugly people, pimps, gangsters and chav wannabee's, but for humans, nah, stick to normal glass.

Our car came as standard with tinted rear glass but I don't think it would be an option I would pay for.

tbh it looks a bit naff. Might be handy if you ever like to get cosy in the back seat without the passersby seeing, but having the front untinted means it's kind of pointless.

I can't see the point, really. Open the windows to let the heat out of the car, then turn on the aircon. I'm not sure ~I understand why having black windows reflect the heat, as black normally absorbs heat much better than a lighter colour.

If it acts as a sunshade for rear seat passengers then maybe it would be worth it.
