I wonder what will happen if/when people post spoilers?

    Test!

I'm very happy on the new version - thank you Martin and team BUT I do find the new smaller "go to" buttons on subscribed threads and the boards index very very difficult to use compared with the nice big blue icon above :(

Must admit, that does seem to fit as well as a monk in a w horehouse, i did think it was a temp thing, may still be????

I may not always see eye to eye with Martin, and am quite forward in saying so at times, but i also give credit where it is due, on this he tried to please his users, so if it has helped, some feedback, maybe a thanks, would not hurt

    Thanks, Martin . . . . . . :)

I can only see the dots and words in white like Test! if I tilt my laptop screen back and I don't normally use it like that.

I have given feedback on the other forum saying I do like the off white/cream colour, I tried testing the other one and it was too much blue for me, so sticking with this one.

Thanks Martin for listening to your users.

...those are the new buttons - and I'm not going to resource redesigning them.
Most of secondary school students are able to do this nowadays and will probably do this for free.
They're clear and bigger as many users have requested.
If the users did request bigger buttons, why "Go to the last post" became almost invisible: firstnew.gif ?! Even with a quality mouse it is difficult to 'catch' it.

And it is being used far more often than all these huge "Thanks", "Quote" and "Abuse".

The alternative new version solves the brightness problem for me. Still pondering whether the old or new version is better for general use, tending towards old one at the moment.

    Wondering if I need to

    a) adjust my monitor
    b) see the optician
    c) start taking earlier nights ...

Less bright is better, but I'm still struggling to read MSE as well as I think I ought to be able to.

The alternate less bright option is reasonable on my laptop but still too bright on my PC...I think overall I will be sticking with the old version.

The problem will be new users who do not realise you can change it. They will come and get the glare of the new version and move elsewhere.

TBH If you are at that stage you really need to be looking at your monitor/eyes ;)
I can read MSE just fine on this display (a nice Sony 22")
same for my 15" laptop with basic display and my middle of the range samsung disaplay
I dropped to the less bright version but didnt have any issues with the original version

Thinking about it, it's not long since I went to the optician, so it's probably the monitor. I'll get DH to take a look and compare it to his monitor.

Although I think it gets worse as the [STRIKE]day[/STRIKE] night goes on.

Ultimately this just didn't make enough difference for me. The less efficient use of vertical space within a topic, in search results, in forum topic lists and the list of forums as well as a harder to hit last post button, my most commonly used navigation tool, all just reduced the usability enough that it's not worth using the newer version.

At some point I might experiment with overriding the style sheets of the new skin to deal with this, but not today.

Or to put it in more financial terms, I've paid good money for a high resolution monitor and I'm not about to fritter it away on an inefficient forum layout that throws away a benefit I've paid good money for. Which is sad for Martin who's paid good money of his own for the new layout. Hopefully it'll deliver benefits for most people.

Thanks for listening and making the attempt Martin, the color change did help and eliminate that as an issue, it just wasn't enough to overcome the rest of the almost universally negative effects of the change on usability.
