[TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] They phoned me this august and said if i gave my details i could have a look at the "artwork" see what i thought. I said i wasn't sure and would have to see if i could afford it. They really made it sound like i only had to send payment if i wanted it. The artwork is shocking, the advert contains my address and said specifically i wouldnt want that on it if i had an advert. I sent a polite email this week not realising that they were like this that i didnt want it and they said i am outside the cancellation period. So have emailed back saying i wasn't told about a cancellation period and that its wrong. No reply yet. I've also emailed consumer direct for advice.
I'm really scared now that i'm going to get loads of bills for money and court letters etc. I am going for a mortgage soon, will this debt show up somewhere on a search, will it go to a CCJ? For the sake of £96 should i just pay it for my mortgages sake, [TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] Really really worried and don't know what to do. Has anyone had any official court action or CCJ's??
Hope everyone else is getting somewhere with their quests too!

Sorry this is a belated response to your post, but. . .

First off: a County Court judgment can't be given until there's been a County Court hearing. And there can't be a County Court hearing involving you unless the Court has written to you to advise of such.

Either way. . . it seems the best course open to anyone worried about all this is not to keep posting on this thread but to contact DangerMouse on the other. You might also wish to check with Liverpool Chamber of Commerce about the existence, or otherwise, of the 'Knight Street Business Centre' as well as for any information it may hold on BCS and CF&L and their respective (or perhaps even, one-and-the-same) proprietors. The Chamber's link is here:

Finally. . . this particular publishing phenomenon has been going on for the past 50 years. There's nothing new about it and, funnily enough, the civil courts are well acquainted with it (these courts may not have precedent to fall back on -- because they can't -- but practitioners are certainly up to speed.)

Got a call about a month ago from a really nice well spoken lady [TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] and they were looking for local businesses to advertise in an emergency services magazine. Sounded genuine and I was busy at the time and as it was only £95 + VAT for the yr I agreed. Then got a call from BCS and everything went through, even got a copy of a magazine sent through (poor quality as someone has stated before)

Had a new call yesterday from Mr Llyod [TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] saying they were doing a new magazine, I stated I thought what I had done was for the year and he explained that what I had advertised in was a magazine for the emergency services staff, this one was for the public!! Received the obligatory call from BCS later that day asking for payment, I said I wasn't interested and left it at that. Low and behold Mr Llyod rang back today asking what the problem was. He has arange for BCS to ring me later, but in the meantime my suspitions were raises so I thought I'd do some digging which is when I came accross this thread!

  • WHY after so many complaints and gripes about this company , complaints to trading standards , whatch dog and the police ARE THEY STILL ALLOWED TO TRADE . there are people thretened with debit collectors and court sumonses . So why the hell dont the people who can do something about them .
  • This is a nasty company and we need to stop them. If we approach together then surely we can do something about them

I am looking for people to send me statements of their experience with them. I have done the usual contact watchdog, trading standards and oft.

oft has cf & l regsitered as a sole trader so i am hoping that as I have had 2 people contact me we can have him investigated.

I also work in the advertising world and they are definitely not adhereing to the ASA CAP CODE (Please google) I will look into putting a complaint into these as well.

I have not paid them any money yet but I am being put into the position of having to soon.

If you want to call me to chat or if you could spare the time to note down what experience you have had my details are. [EMAIL="chase-electrical@live.co.uk"]chase-electrical@live.co.uk[/EMAIL] or 01752313872.

    Kind Regards

Have you seen The Advertising Protection Agency website ?

The information is in the public domain and you might find it interesting and useful.
Never ever give your card details to anyone over the phone, and check the reputation of any company you do intend to give them to.

TAPA is also a SCAM and is linked to the bogus scam advertising companies.

TAPA is a very clever counter SCAM to extort a regular payment from you. They have just tried this on with my poor Aunty who was signed up to TAPA (for free... so they say!) by a well meaning nephew. They send you a pack of information through, which you don't read because they don't want you to and they know most people don't bother. They then ring you up around a week of so later using a very legitimate sounding 7 day cooling off period saying that you owe them money for their services because you didn't cancel within 7 days of receiving their information pack! When you look the costs are hidden in amongst lots of small print.

When you challenge them on the phone about not signing anything, no legitimate contract agreeing to pay they turn nasty, you owe us this money, pay up or we will take you to court etc, etc.

Do not get involved with TAPA... it will make things worse, not better!
  • Apologies if i should have started a new thread.. Mods, feel free to move post...

OK, i was called by BCS earlyish November. I did agree to renew my ad. on the phone (i was in the middle of a job and wasn't particularly concentrating on the call). Was told i would receive copy of ad. in post etc.

Received invoice dated 11/11/11. No copy of ad. As finances are tight, decided to cancel. Wrote on 15th, (day after invoice received). Tried to post Recorded Delivery, but as P.O. Box, Post Office said 1st class only. Posted 1st class.

On 25/11 received payment reminder. Emailed that evening advising had already written and cancelled.

Received "courtesy call" next morning. Advised had written and emailed. Was told no right of cancellation, contract binding etc., will sue if not paid.

This morning received another invoice. Total jumped from £152 to £782.

I have nointention of paying this. I presume i am within my rights to cancel 48 hours after receiving original paperwork?? BTW, never have received copy of proposed advert....

I have contacted at random some of the other companies in the booklet and they have a similar story, unfortunateley some have paid. They have been phoning companies and asking if they would be interested in placing an advert. They then send an invoice with a poorly constructed booklet showing the advert and an invoice. I conatacted them immedietly and said I did not want to place an advert (answer Phone). They contacted me again and said it was too late to cancel. I have never commited to placing an advert with them but they say they have a recording of me placing an order, I have requested all the recorded conversations from them, Five in total, I have had none sent?
    LETTER TO THEM AS FOLLOWS

    Dear B.C.S. Multimedia

I have made it clear from the first phone call from you, now five in total, that I did not want an advert in your magazine unless I recieved a previous copy of the magazine and art work for approval.

I did not recieve a previous copy of the magazine as requested (phone conversation) the artwork was sent but with the invoice and I imediatley phoned to cancel as the artwork was not correct.

I have phoned other companies in the the low quality draft booklet sent to me, those contacted say they have had similar threats, one has paid.

I am now contacting others in the magazine to see if a pattern is emerging.

As indicated by this e mail I am keeping trading standards Liverpool (By web site form) & Cornwalland citizens advice informed of any further developments.
