My wife fell pregnant on the coil a about 2 weeks after it had been "checked". We went to the local hospital to be told she had miscarried as they couldn't find any detection of a baby and she was given a tablet for nature to take it's course and the coil was removed. She didn't take it and we went back for a check up a week later. Lo and behold they found a baby. God knows how many doctors etc followed and a grunt and a stern look from the original doctor (who I would gladly have belted if she were a man) and we were fine. She is 20 months old now.

Thats a lovely ending to a frightening story :)

    My DD is 22 now.

The coil was 'delivered' 20 minutes before she was. I did not know I was pregnant until I was 18 weeks.

In those bad old days the Consultant made an appointment foor me to have the coil removed, I rang the Royal College of Midwives for information (again none readily available) and they suggested that there were risks in both leaving it in and taking it out. My decision was it stayed, fortunately for us it worked out well.

As it turned out my daughter is my only child. I am so lucky to have her, to be her mum. More children would have been wonderful but was not to be.

    Good luck

Barriejohn, do you know whether your wife was on the Mirena or the copper coil?

Thanks everyone for your posts - some very personal. I'm still feeling very "odd" but it might just be me coming down with a cold which is throwing all my senses off and making me tired - doesnt explain the pains in my stomach though...

I'm going to go out and buy a digital test today - havent really got too much spare cash flying around but at least this way I'll know for certain.

Hi Margaret - the copper coil or the Mirena?

Oh heavens, I've no idea. We are talking a number of years ago now, and no doubt there are different kinds of coil available these days. But there was definitely a coil embedded in the placenta, and it happened (to me) more than once. No damage to either mum or baby, as I recall.

I fell pregnant on the copper coil - had had it for 3 years no problem and then one day it stopped working - I went to my GP with a correctly placed coil and a positive pregnancy test.

I had the coil taken out at 6 weeks - they told me i may miscarry but didn't - spotted for a couple of days, when i went for the 20 week scan (i had just got my head round having another baby we already had a 5 yr old and 8 yr old) there was a hole next to his umbilical cord so his intestines where on the outside!! However i was closely monitored he was born at 40 weeks and had surgery to correct at 24 hours and has been fine ever since - he is now 5.

They can't be sure if the problem was due to having coil removed but it does seem a coincidence!! When i asked why i had fell the doctor did say i had a slight cyst on an ovary that may have produced enough hormone to override the effects of the coil.

My little boy is an absolute joy and was obviously mean't to be :T

Go to your GP or Sexual Health Clinic, it will be free and they can give you any advice you might need in case it is positive.

My friend had 2 early miscarriages (7 and 8 weeks) with the mirena she then miscarried twins at 17 weeks.. the docs said to leave it in .. it dislodged ruptured her uterus, perforated her bladder, damaged her fallopian tubes and caused the death of the babies. After that it took her 4 years and 3 miscarriages to conceive due to the lasting damage and a further 5 years and 4 m/c's to conceive the next one.

It is very common to conceive with the mirena, the docs just don't tell you about it.. they do like to sugar coat the research somewhat in their favour.

Well - we are certainly seeing enough tales here of this not having worked.

I'm surprised if doctors "sugarcoated research" in that respect these days - you would think they would have visions of getting a solicitors letter stating "You told me it would work - it DIDNT - now pay up" - or isnt it possible to bring a legal claim on things like this?

Whew! Glad I never used the coil. Thank goodness for the heavy dosage contraceptive Pills that people used back in my day - I think that type of Pill is still available? (Think it was Microgynon 30??? was quite some years since I needed it so not sure if memory is playing tricks on me about the name. That particular one is still available.)

    Hi all,

I just wanted to let you know that I got my period today - my first in almost 18 months since I've been on the Mirena.

I guess that would explain the hormonal feelings, the bloated belly pains and sore boobs - its been so long since I felt like this I'd forgotten what it was all about! Thanks for everyones input on this thread.
