Has anyone ever fallen pregnant on the coil?

Options
:o

I have two children aged 2y9m and 18m and "feel" pregnant. In the last few days I have really noticed a complete difference in my body and I'm off to buy a test today but just wanted to ask the question on here.

I had the Mirena fitted in Jan 2009 when my son was 7 weeks old. In October last year I went to the clinic as I couldnt find the strings and they checked and said it is in place, but has just gone up a bit high so I wouldnt be able to check it anymore. I've never had periods on it so not sure if I'm late or anything.

I'm probably worrying over nothing but just feel very much like I did in the mid stages of pregnancy - gagging on toothpaste, sore and stretchy feeling around my lower abdomen and a strange taste in my mouth. It wouldnt be a disaster if I was pregnant again, but circumstances (debt) mean it would be better for us if I wasnt at this time though we could muddle through.

My OH's old room mate became pregnant on the coil so yes it's very very possible. She unfortunately lost the baby as the stupid doctor said she didn't need to remove it. She lost the baby at 20 weeks. Very horrible. So if you do find you are pregnant, get it removed ASAP. even if the doctor says "oh no, it's ok"

I'd heard that neneromanova when I had it fitted. Thanks for your reply.

As a former practising midwife I can tell you I have delivered several babies with the coil implanted in the placenta.

I did fall pregnant with the normal coil, but it's highly unlikely with the Mirena, the failure rate is extremely low and it's the next best thing to sterilisation as you have the double protection of the coil and the hormones.

It could just be your body reacting differently to the hormones, as it does from time to time. I rarely get periods but occasionally get full blown PMT symptoms follwed by a light bleed, then it's back to normal for another 6-9 months.

Just to add, I've never ever been able to feel my strings, I'm on my 3rd Mirena now and it's always been like that. It's a pain when you need it changed though, i had to have mine done by a gynae at the hospital.

Hi Margaret - the copper coil or the Mirena?

My DD there is a Minera baby!

It's assumed that it came out at some point because it didn't show up in any scans and they had a good check (she was born by elective C section) at her birth to make sure it wasn't in any tissues (the minera is hard to pick up on ultrasound and X ray due it having very little metal).

I have no idea when it came out either. Could never feel the strings, last time it was checked was September and I conceived December the following year. It had been in for 3 years before that.

But yes, it is pretty common from what I have heard since. Needless to say, DH went and had the snip while I was pregnant.

You need to do a test and if it is positive, get to your GP ASAP (even if you just call and speak to them). They usually like to get you scanned as soon as possible because of the higher risk of ectopic pregnancy as well as they have to remove the coil (if possible) and check it's position.

And removing it carries just as high a risk of miscarriage - so either way there is a risk

I'd love it, really I would. I've always wanted 3 children but finances hold us back. We agreed that once November 2011 comes round we can reassess and maybe try for another then - all the debt would be gone so we could afford for me to go part time at work.

But... I'm also dreading the thought if I am pregnant. I dont think I am - I'm just panicking.

    And breathe...! :D
