as do my five year old my eight year old and my ten year old...however my three year old can not do anything on his own at all...he needs someone to go to the toilet with him..he has one to one at nursery otherwise he attacks other children...he cant be left on his own with his brother and sisters as he will hurt them and has before caused a nasty wound to my sons head withh a toy that required hospitalistion

Little boy is pretty normal and leads a normal life apart from not talking and just making wee noises here and there.

Not all 2 year olds are talking by that age. I know whose son wasn't. He is now 3 and is talking. (probably makes no difference - but he does have completely different disabilities)

Hi there, I get high rate care for my 2 yr old son. He has Juvenile Arthritis and has lots of joints affected. To get high rate care you have to show that they need lots more help at NIGHT as well as day. My baby has temperatures which spike then come down but during these times he is sick and has terrible nappies, and i have to stretch his joints out and give him physio so we find we are up most of the night as Dominic in terrible pain. I do a drug round twice a day and have to inject him once a week. As he is not doing well he is now about to start a new drug where i will inject him every day. I was convinced that we were not going to get it and was shocked when we did.

The hospital consultant had to provide a factual report as did the health visitor so the more health professionals you have on your side the better and they will help you fill out the forms.

DLA is hard to get but if you tell the truth but then it should be fine It really helps with hospital admissions and helps make up wages i have lost as i had to resign from my job to look after Dom.

High rate is £285 every 4 weeks. We cant have mobility as he is not old enough but will write to us when he is 3. (he can only walk a few steps and learnt to do that in past couple of weeks HooRay)

As DLA dont just take our word for it and check with health professionals if a child really does not need it they wont get it.

It doesn't have to be 24/7 though. It's got to be most of the day and an hour (I think) at night. or the other waya round.

    Hi

I was the one that said describe a worse day and that was advice from the dla helpline person, when I phoned for help lol. Also as pointed out above they dont just take your word, for our last claim, when he turned 5, they wrote to his teaching assistant, his consultant and his gp. Its not an easy form to fill and I had to ring on several occasions for help with it, like when it says what supervision he needs and its in minutes and he needs 24hr extra upervision. I cant even let him play in the garden with his brotehr as he will climb the gate, even at night he will try to escape the house, we have everything locked, but have been woken up by him kicking the windows to get out.

It said on the letter that we qualify because he needs so much help at night as well as during the day. I got the impression that we got the highest rate because of that. I will say that filling the form out (i did mine myself) i found really upsetting because you have to focus on what the child cant do rather than can and as any mum will agree who has had to fill the form in its quite distressing. It took me 10 days to complete fully and then took them 6 mths to sort out. We claimed last October and got payment this Feb.

my three year old son is in the process of being diagnosed on the autism spectrum...he has been statemneted and we have senco involved etc

does he qualify for dla or not..the website seems very confusing

My (almost) 5 year old daughter was awarded DLA at 3, we got it even though she was still awaiting assessment for ASD. She got middle rate care until last August when I applied for re-assessment as her sleep was so much worse. She now receives higher rate care (& her consultant reckons she will be awarded lower rate mobility from her 5th birthday as well).

Certainly worth applying for. (& good luck with the forms - take a photocopy before you send them, so you have them for next time or if they lose them).
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

(I will find the link later) Online, there is a form you can download. You can put all the information into that first - this way you won't have to keep on scribbling out if you make a mistake.

Hi ....My twin son was also diagnosed at three with severe autism.. You may qualify for dla when i say this it does depend on your sons care needs, when Thomas was three it wasn't until he was 4 he was awarded low care and low mobility, Thomas is now 12 and has been awarded high care and high mobility for four years this is because 1,he is still non verbal 2,still in nappies 3,attends a special school and cannot wash bath or dress himself
You will also find the forms a little off putting they ask about what your son can and cannot do for himself they may also ask for a report for the hospital
