    Hi Hun

My 5 year old boy is on the spectrum and we do get dla.

It will depend on what level of care your child needs, the national autisum association website has a page for help with filling in dla.

We get high care, because he is still double incontant at night, smears his feacese at night, he also wakes up 6-8 times a night and he is on medication. He needs constant supervision. He also has Hypermobility jont syndrome and needs help with dressing ect.

We get now the low rate mobility, but couldnt apply for that until he was 5 (even though he is in a buggy all the time) as until 5 it is classed as normal for a child under 5.

Do feel in the form as a bad day, not a good day.

If you ever need to chat then Im usually around. The next few months will be hardest, I went thorugh a time of deprssion then a time of guilt where I blamed myself for his autism, when I know thats not the case, but you think about everytime they banged their head and wetaher that effected him.

I wouldnt change my jake for anything, even when he is screaming and kicking as it him if you know what I mean.

My friends son has just been diagnosed with autism and has just turned 2. Mum seems to think they will get awarded full DLA at a sum of £500 a month and get a mobility car. This sound correct?

It depends on how the autism affects him. Some people with autism can lead very normal lives, while at the other end of the scale some will need help all day every day.

My son got DLA at around 3yo. He's 13 now, and we're waiting to hear from DLA with the decision on the latest renewal.

If they got higher rate for both care and mobility the amount is around £500 - but you don't get a 'free' car. The mobility part of your award goes to pay for the car, so you'd get the car, plus £250(ish) care.

I don't think you can claim for the mobility part for such a young child. I know I couldn't when my DS was younger - I think (as said above), he needed to be 5. It's difficult with little ones, the whole DLA form is looking at what extra help the child needs above what a 'normal' child would. So for a two year old you could say any two year old needs constant supervision whether they have autism or not, iykwim!

Yea I understand, its just my friend suddenly thinks she is going to get all these benefits! When I dont think she will! Little boy is pretty normal and leads a normal life apart from not talking and just making wee noises here and there. Still wears a nappy etc just like alot of 2 year olds still do. Its only really the speech part thats a problem. Tried to explain to my friend part of dla is taken away in place of a car but she seems to think the car is in addition to the dla and nothing is taken off the money. She hasnt even got the forms through yet but she is living in this little world and Im trying to find out a little more to help her understand.

My memory isn't too good :o, but I think when my DS was young, we only got lower or middle rate for care. It wasn't until he was older and things like still being in nappies wasn't normal for his age, that he got moved to higher rate.

Also, if you are needing nappies after the age of three and have special needs, our local health authority supply them. But, before the age 3 it's seen as normal to need nappies.

Karen - there should be information on the motability site. I think some people may get the car plus a small amount of the mobility component. (depending on what car you have) What you've said is true - the car isn't free. You do have to give up the mobility component.

To the person who said do it on the worst day - this is fraud. It's also obvious too. There is nothing to stop you saying "on better days...", on average days..." & "on bad days..."

You can get HRM from 3 years old. Is it only LRM that's from 5 then?

Yes. LRM is payable from 5 and HRM is payable from 3.
