Does anyone know what i should do about a new claim for children? I know my claim should have ended when my partner moved in that was march last year. Do we make a new claim as a couple?? I dont know what to do now as they have stopped the taxcredit and we have nothing coming in. Jobcentre arnt much help they said we dont pay for children. I dont understand what i have to do please help
  • If you are fully responsible for children under 16 (or 20 if in full time none advanced education), you should put them on your new joint claim. This means they live with you, you pay for all their needs etc. You will be able to claiim again as a couple with no problem. Just remember to be truthful with all your circumstances, and keep them up to date!

Yes, you must put in a new couple claim. Regardless of what action HMRC take to collect your overpayment, you still need to claim now.
All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.

If I were you, I would contact the tax credit office immediately irrespective of how scared you are. Yes, you have done wrong but at the same time you have nothing to live on. The consequence is likely to be the same whether you phone them or you wait until they phone you. The fact is is that you cannot live on nothing and as most other posters have said it is likely they will make allowances for you. If you can prove you have been a carer it may be that one benefit will offset another so overall you maybe neutral in who owes who what. But the fact is, it is like debt, the longer you leave it the worse it will get, you think you owe them money now, what if you get in to rent arrears etc, it will not get any easier with time, and the golden goose will never arrive.

Thank you for all your replys it helps when i can speak to people about it. I will have to put a new claim in i feel awfull having to claim after lying to them But we have nothing coming in only childbenefit and rent needs paying before i'm in major debt with them. I will make a new claim for taxcredit and go back to citizens advice the lady there said she could speak to them while i'm there maybe that might help and come to some sort of arrangement to pay back what i owe. Do you know what dates i should start our claim? My partner moved back in about a year before i had to give up my job. I knw i have to end my old claim from that date but i cant claim from that date as i still was getting wtc but shouldnt of been
  • You will only get it backdated 93 days from the day it is processed.

you need to get your new joint claim in as quickly as possible as they will normally only backdate it 3months from when its received.
also you are likely to have a hefty overpayment but as long as you talk to them about it they are likely to be very reasonable when it comes to repayment, especially as you are not working currently.

your single claim will stop from date your partner moved in and new joint claim is only likely to backdate 93 days as mentioned above.
