I don't agree about cheap meaning bad. I'm on my third Skoda Octavia and it has never been to a dealer except for servicing and is cheaper than a laguna and some top range meganes. Before that I had Audi A4 and VW Passatts as company cars and only had one problem with the VW and a failed catalytic converter.
Wife recently changed from a Honda Jazz (never a problem either minor or major) to a Megane (she loved the shape!) and whilst it's not gone in for repairs, in only the three months she's owned it the back wheels sqeel when she reverses, key card has failed to start car/open doors on numerous occasions and the overall body panal fits are atrocious - like the panals were glued on by a blind monkey/french person.
This isn't cheap engineering, it's cheap design and manufacturing - no excuse for panals not fitting properly and whilst I agree cars are just electro/mechanical things, the Japanese seem to get theirs to work and never breakdown so maybe a defeatist attitude is what we'd expect from the FrenchAnger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
Mercedes A class are just as rubbish
and I have heard other horror stories about other german marks
now i am confirmed japanese mark buyer

renault are the least reliable cars - similar to citreon, peugeot, ala romeo and fiat.
the biggest problems we see with renaults are electrical.
not only do you have a unreliable manufacturer - but also the worst car in their lot.
the laguna is a well known dog - which is why they have very poor residuals.0 -
Yeah, we have had reliability problems with our cars - but a lot of that is in the past. Current Clio is produced to a MUCH higher standard than previous models, and that is shown by the reduction in warranty claim that dealers submit.

I'm battling to get Renault to extend the warranty on my '53 Megane. I bought it new and to extend the warranty for 2 years would cost £800. Renault are offering £200 dealership vouchers to use towards servicing costs or extended warrany purchase or £1000 off the cost of buying a new car.
In less than three years I've had the following repaired under warranty:
squealing brakes - cleaned and then replaced
washer pump replaced
clutch pedal repaired
tyrod end replaced - due to excessive play in the steering rack
electronic window manufacturer recall
shock absorber replaced
4 ignition coils replaced
wiper sensor fault repaired
keyless card system failure
brake pad manufacturer recall
distributor replaced - due to dephaser and timing belt faults
TDC sensor (flywheel starting sensor) replaced
The car has broken down on me at least half a dozen times, once I had to call out the AA, and I've been unable to drive it on at least 2 occasions due to electrical faults...
Add to this the usual extortionate servicing costs and parts replacement - 2 tyres, headlight and indicator light bulbs, front and back wipers, brake pads, seat tilt knob repair...
I think I deserve at least £800 compensation, don't you?0 -
I remember when a 200 mile trip on holiday meant that a full srvice was required before it was attempted!!must be getting old.
You have been unlucky with this vehicle, however i think most cars these days are far more reliable than ever before.Modern cars have so much equipment on them that there are loads more things to go wrong too.
One of our cars is french and has been fine, the other is english and so has that.My mother and i both have the same tv,mine no problems in 5 years, hers away about 5 times for repair!!.Think its the luck of the draw.:DThere are two sides to every story.

the old days of crossing your fingers when starting the car?
the ford cortina mk4's whose door handles used to snap in your hand?
the BL stable of cars that had more rust than bodywork?
the lancia that must have been the quickest ever car to rust?
good old days0 -

From reliabilityindex.co.uk - Renault are one of the worst.
However I think it goes way beyond just how reliable a car is. The other major factor is how good the dealer garages are at sorting out and faults. Renault are AWFUL at sorting any problems in my experience. Even their service managers seem disinterested in helping out ("talk to the branch" , etc)matched betting: £879.63

Dont talk to me about Renault cars! I've thought about posting this in the last couple of days because we're so angry about it, didnt realise there was already a thread about dodgy Renault electrics!
Ours is a 2001 Laguna Estate which we've owned for 18 months and it had 67,000 miles on the clock when we bought it with full service history. In the last couple of months we have had to pay over £400 for a new windscreen wiper motor which gave up on me in a downpour on the motorway. On Friday I booked it in the garage as all the dash lights were on, petrol guage not working, light alarm not working etc. They reprogrammed the instrument panel at a cost of £76 and said if it happened again we would need a new instrument panel at a cost of £532! Guess what happened - yes the lights are back on again.
We havent got £500. Should we write to Renault to complain, surely they have some comeback?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
