OK so here's a couple of firsts for me - first time I've ever uploaded a photo (hope it's not huge!!!!) and the first time I've ever attempted a 'proper' cake. It's the tank that I've just made for hubby's 40th birthday.

anyone ever atempted anything like this before???

What di d you use to stack, dowels or pillars?

best place and cheapest place to buy cigerllos?

im assuming it would be sponge cake for all tiers (as im not sure cigarillos and buttercream would go with a fruit cake lol)

i would use dowels to stack it, and put quite a few of them in the bottom layer as it is going to have to take quite a weight

cigarillos arent cheap - ive bought some off ebay before, and a box that cost £15 just about covered an 8" cake

Never attempted anything like this but I would have thought this one was on pillars because of the gaps between the layers for the flowers. Never used cigarellos either but found this website which may be of use.
  • hi, im new to this and i have just started baking cupcakes. it all started with my gran's 80th birthday coming up and i said i would try and do her a cupcake tower for it. I have been practising but still need a little help. can someone tell me what is the best piping nozzle to use, i had the tala make but the biggest star just doesnt seem big enough for the cupcakes or am i doing something wrong?

i would be very grateful for any tips or advice

    Thanks

(also just seen the previous post about cigarillos - i tried to look for these but found they were expensive so i substituted them for white chocolate fingers - they still looked ok). i tried to post a picture but it wont let me as i am new

    Thanks for the website.

    Have you tried them before?

I was just pricing this up and it will cost approx £200 before flowers so at least this gives my sister an idea of price. She is looking for this for her sons wedding. She has a local cake lady that shes used before so will see what price she can do it for otherwise I can do a DIY job for her. AT least I cake buy the sponge ready made and therefore I can enjoy more time around when the wedding is instead of baking myself. :D
  • That cake is gorgeous, I see it often in the wedding magazines I buy :)

    Hi,

I think the nozzle I use for cupcakes is something like this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WILTON-1M-STAR-TIP-NOZZLE-CUPCAKE-ICING-BUTTERCREAM-/120681871272?pt=Uk_Crafts_Cake_Decorating_MJ&hash=item1c193337a8

and this is the recipe I use for the icing:

    Cream Cheese, 250grams (9oz)
    Butter, 150grams (5oz)
    Icing Sugar, 400grams, (14oz)
    Vanilla Essence, half a teaspoon

Add all ingredients into a food processor and mix at full speed for 30 seconds. If you don't have a food processor (like me) then put all ingredients in a bowl, cover slightly with a tea towel (so icing sugar doesn't go every where and mix with an electric hand mixer!

I have made this a few times now, and I use stork marg instead of butter which may make it go a bit runnier, so I just keep adding icing sugar untill I get a nice consistency..

No I haven't tried them. Another website that sells them and I know has a very good reputation is http://www.sugaricing.com/ they also sell the sponge cakes as well.
