    Hi,

I have made a few of these Cakes before (see pic on my avatar) and they are really easy and look impressive.

I used a 2 pint Pyrex Pudding basin to make mine. You don't need the Lakeland spray, in my opinion, you just need to grease the cake tin with marg/butter (just use your fingers to rub butter/marg all around the inside of the tin) then pour some flour into the tin to dust the inside of it. This will stop the cake sticking to the tin (I have never had a problem with cakes sticking to the tin).

With the fondant icing, you should be able to buy a pink ready coloured findant icing from a Cake decorating shop, or you can colour it pink yourself with a bit of red food colouring. The gel food colourings are more concentrated so you don't need to use as much and they don't make the icing too wet and sticky. If you are wanting a baby pink colour though, you wouldn't need to use much food colouring, so in my opinion you would be fine with the liquid food colouring. Use cornflour to roll the icing out onto (to stop it sticking).

When you stick the fondant onto your cake you can either use buttercream or apricot jam mixed with a tiny bit of water to act as a glue.
    Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for the tips! I never knew i had to glue the fondant down! I was going to just cover it directly over the cake lol! Glad i read this thread!! I don't know where the nearest cake shop is to me so i think i will use food colouring and pray i get it right. How soon do you think i should start baking? The party is in 2 weeks. The night before? If i do it 2 nights before would it still taste ok? I had a look at the pic it looks nice but the pic is very tiny. Maybe it's me not doing it right? Do you have a bigger photo for me to nose? :)

By pudding basin do you mean the glass bowls?? Also is it just normal sponge you put in it and how do you get the doll in the middle?

I would bake the Cake 2 days before the party, and decorate it the night before. It will still taste fine. I don't like having too much to do all in on go.

Yes I use a pyrex (glass) 2 pint pudding basin (they sell these in most supermarkets or Wilko). To stick the doll in I took the legs off and cut a little hole in the top of the cake.

You will be fine colouring the icing pink, just add abit of food colouring at a time (I use a cocktail stick to dip into the food colouring and then stab it into the icing. You just squish it about and roll it around in your hands untill you get the colour you want

Thanks Zippy! Your one is fab! I've been reading up a lot on Barbie cakes the last few days so i hope it will be a straightforward mission! Did you personalised the cake? I have a cake board to place the cake on but was wondering where to add the name and age? Also, candles where did you place them? I don't really want to place it on the cake... ruin the look? I've seen someone made a small cupcake with candles on and had Barbie holding it! But do you know by any chance how the cupcake is secured to Barbie's hand? Is there some sort of baking glue?

This is what i mean by the cupcake candle - http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Make-A-Doll-Cake

One more thing! Sorry! If i bake the cake 2 nights before how should i store it? In the fridge or in foil in room temperature?

Lol! Tell me about it! I was going to buy some princess cake toppers from ebay and stick them on top of a cake i was going to make but when DD saw the Barbie cake there was no going back! I am not much of a baker only made cookies for the first time last Xmas! But i am determine to make her one now as i've really gotten into it. Google Barbie cake and you will see loads of cakes people have done, some very extravagant! When do you need your cake for? Mine is in 2 weeks maybe we can help each other? I found this which gives the recipe and instruction if that helps - http://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/497885/keely-s-mum-s-princess-cake

And i love this cake but it's beyond me! http://christinelua328.blogspot.com/2009/09/barbie-doll-birthday-cake-for-zhi-xuan.html

This video tutorial is very good too. I thought about decorating the dress like this but i prefer the fondant icing look to the frosting. - http://www.howdini.com/howdini-video-7075975.html

if you want something a bit different why not try cake pops instead of a normal birthday cake, you can decorate however you want
