Yep! I got the doctor Oetker PJ68 recommended for the detail, and the main yellow I bought some ready made fondant and coloured it with paste. I used a little butter cream to stick the fondant to the cupcake

Thanks to everyone for thier advice and help - I am going to make some more tonight for my step sons football tomorrow!

I need to practice as I am making my own wedding cupcakes

Hi, can you or anyone give me some advice please? I am making my daughter's 4th birthday cake and she wants the 3D Barbie doll dress cake. I've already brought the dome tin but i am worried about covering the cake with the fondant icing! You mentioned you covered your cakes with butter cream? Is that what i need to do first before covering the cake? Also i need pink fondant icing but like you only found the white ready to roll ones. Can i used red food colouring or does it have to be paste? I never heard of paste before! Lol! Which is best? Also, to release the cake out of the tin i heard someone mention a Lakeland spray? I am having doubts about covering the cake this way as it seems hard to do!! Thought about using frosting to cover the cake but i've seen so many Barbie doll cakes with fondant dresses and in my opinion looks so much nicer. Any help or advice on my first time baking would be greatly received! Oh, i did enquire about ordering the cake but they wanted £85! Didn't realised it would be so expensive! lol! TIA :)

    Hi,

I have made a few of these Cakes before (see pic on my avatar) and they are really easy and look impressive.

I used a 2 pint Pyrex Pudding basin to make mine. You don't need the Lakeland spray, in my opinion, you just need to grease the cake tin with marg/butter (just use your fingers to rub butter/marg all around the inside of the tin) then pour some flour into the tin to dust the inside of it. This will stop the cake sticking to the tin (I have never had a problem with cakes sticking to the tin).

With the fondant icing, you should be able to buy a pink ready coloured findant icing from a Cake decorating shop, or you can colour it pink yourself with a bit of red food colouring. The gel food colourings are more concentrated so you don't need to use as much and they don't make the icing too wet and sticky. If you are wanting a baby pink colour though, you wouldn't need to use much food colouring, so in my opinion you would be fine with the liquid food colouring. Use cornflour to roll the icing out onto (to stop it sticking).

When you stick the fondant onto your cake you can either use buttercream or apricot jam mixed with a tiny bit of water to act as a glue.
    Hope that helps!
