After looking up the book on Amazon I've just spent the last half an hour watching videos of them icing cupcakes on you tube - they do some really brill ones and none of them look too difficult, I loved the chineses food ones.

Here is a recipe for a 7" square or 8" round vanilla sponge cake. I use this all the time and it is gorgeous :D

This makes a sponge approx 2 1/2" deep so you will need a 3" tin really. I also use an electric mixer for all the mixing:D

How many people do these size of cakes 'serve'?
i just got edible cake toppers from here. ordered saturday arrived monday - looks fab!

They look lovely, really handy to be able to get them like that too:)

  • Moody mel- I would say that size cake would serve approx 20 people depending on how generous you are with your servings:D

    Hi Laides,

I tried using my silicone giant cupcake tin last week using a devils food recipe....didn't go too well :( Didn't know you had to grease it and it was undercooked aswell :( Oh well, atleast I know what to do next time :)

I got mine from The Works shop in town and it was £5.99. They also have a 100 piece decorating set for £2.99 and a cupcake stand for £5.99. I only bought the 100 piece set for the impressions that you get in it, but the nozzles look pretty good too. There's even a grass tip which will come in handy. :)

    100 Piece decorating set

    CupCake Stand

Can't find the Giant Cup cake link though although it's definately in the shop :)
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..

Thanks...plenty big enough for my son's birthday cake then...well probably too big, but I will just give VERY generous pieces;)

    I have another question (sorry:o)

What range of ingredients do most of you use...do you use branded flour/sugar/butter etc or supermarket range, or even the value ranges...and does it make much difference in the quality of the cake? Do some ingredients NEED to be better quality than others, for example can you use value butter but must use branded flour to get a good quallity and tasty, light, moist cake?

Again, sorry for the questions, but I am going to buy the stuff I need on Tuesday as his birthday is inless than 2 weeks.....I am going to decorate it halloween style, maybe draw a spiderweb on it and make a big spider to sit on the web:)

Now this is something new for me to try! I wanted to start icing somewhere and if this is easy I am well inspired to try! Thank you so much!
I make these every year for my Kids to take to Xmas Parties at School/Cubs/Beavers etc

Really easy to do, just ice some buns, then use fondant icing to make a ball shape for the head. Eyes are and buttons are made by dipping a cocktail stick into some black food colouring. Hats/Scarfs and Noses are made with coloured fondant (carrot noses are stuck to the head with a bit of icing)

They always go down really well :D Last year I made Santa Hats for the snowmen out of fondant icing.

Thanks for the recipe! I shall definitely give it a try! In terms of making toppers, for example in the night garden characters, what should I use? It is just simply icing with food colouring which are then moulded into shape?

You are all so talented!!! I hope mine turns out as good as yours!

    Thanks again!

Yes, just make the characters out of ready to roll fondant icing, just use it like it's playdoh! you can leave them to 'dry out' for a few days after making them. Most Supermarkets sell a pack of different coloured fondant icing, or you can colour it yourself with food colouring, or go to a specialist cake decorating shop for a wider range of ready coloured icing.

A tip I learn't from here is to use cornflour to stop the icing sticking to your hands and worktops

Good Luck....don't forget to include pics!
