I have 2 fish tanks so could any "Old wife tale" solutions be out there to deal with fleas in the carpet etc. for safety ???
On the net, there are some silly suggestions like a bowl of soappy water by the telly so they drop in when the fleas are watching tv!!
I will buy a flea collar for the vac bag.
Does Rug Patrol or a similar carpet flea shake work ??
I have a Bissell Quick Wash - would that take them out ???0 -

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by that. The only way to kill fleas is with an effective insecticide.

That, and those sticky pads or ultraviolet gadgets might be an amusing diversion but they won't address the real problem as I think you already realise.

Does Rug Patrol or a similar carpet flea shake work ?? Dunno, I'd have to check the ingredients.

Vacuuming will encourage the pupating adults to emerge and with luck you'll suck them up into the hoover-bag. You should ensure that you remove the bag every time you use the vacuum-cleaner and get it outside and preferably burn it.
The products to look out for which contain the Insect Growth Regulator should (but not always) have METHOPRENE on the label. This prevents the eggs and larvae from developing. Most environmental sprays will contain Permethrin and Tetramethrin (or something similar) which are insecticides and will kill the adult fleas.
Never forget that for every adult flea on the cat there will be hundreds or probably even thousands of eggs and larvae lurking around the place ready to develop into adults. THIS is why it is absolutely necessary to carry out a two-pronged attack to get to grips with the situation. The Frontline on its own will work eventually but it could be ages and ages and in the meantime your cat will be suffering absolute misery.
Sorry, I can't advise on whether any products are safe to use around fish-tanks.0 -
thanks for replies...
It was hard to find skin as so much fur and scruffy neck! I did wet the fur a bit to the left of collar bone.
I had to hold puss on my lap for a few hours to help let it dry, he has licked it a bit when away from me.
I've seen a dead flea and a dazed one so far!
I've bought some 'Bob Martin Home flea kill' shake vac which contains Permethrin.
Any further tip for next time in 4-5 weeks?!0 -
Permethrin can be toxic to cats so PLEASE do not use the bob martins stuff! I am a vet nurse and have seen cats die from permetherin toxicity from supermarket flea treatments!
http://uk.merial.com/pet_owners/permethrin_toxicity.aspI don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

what carpet flea treatments do people use in conjunction with Frontline? (i have to be wary of harming the cat n fish)0

Indorex
I tried putting the pippettes in the vacuum bag - cheaper than putting a flea collar in there as there's no way i would change the bag every time I use vacuum - not money saving at all!0 -
ive heard bad things about bob martin, i wouldnt use it myself, if there are already fleas on your cat, frontline may be less effective, i was told advantage would be better in situations like this which is why i mentioned it on my original post
read up online, also see pet forums0 -
I got a refund on the BM Home Kill.
My puss had only 1 flea on him today and that one was dazed!! It would have normally pinged off BUT it was just behaving odd!!
How does Frontline kill the fleas???0 -
I think the Frontline covers the whole body in something that gets them. I don't think it's the kind of formulation where the fleas have to bite the cat before they are affected. Please don't forget that just because there was only one flea actually on the cat today that there aren't hundreds lurking around waiting to hatch when the time is right0

Frontline is not very effective! Alot of people no longer use it on their pets. Try Advantage, Advocat or Stronghold - these are far more effective & faster acting.0
