In our shop we have security, so they do most of the work with shoplifters. our shop is located in a prime spot, and we get several shoplifters a day.
the police can give on the spot £80 penalties, if they have the money to pay the fine (which they never do) they can go home pending court appearance.
if not, they usually get a night in the cells, then released on bail pending court.
we also use the civil recovery scheme, which means the store doesn't lose out, we claim back through the courts: the value of the items stolen, plus wage costs of anyone involved, ie. the security guards and any staff member who helped with the incident, for the duration they were taken away from their other duties, the offender pays this.

we do have repeat offenders who have ended up in prison, but usually when released they end up back in shoplifting the very day they're released.

Nice shop I work in, I know!!!

See that is why i dont get why people continue to shoplift
surely being arrested taken to court and then fined and come after for costs would put anyone off.

There is known horror stories regarding TK Maxx and the civil recovery scheme. Where people have been accused of shoplifting, police involved, proven not to be the case, (most times errors by over zealous guards) no further action by police, no court action etc, however TK Maxx then send letters demanding money, thus really saying a person was guilty of an offence when they were proven not to be.

    Very interesting thread this.

I remember watching a programme years ago about a woman who made a living out of shoplifting. She would steal the stuff and then take it back for a refund.

I reckon people get a buzz from doing it, but I could never do it!

I believe so. after reading a article last night on wiki i believe some do it for kicks others do it because their mates do it
there are some that do it out of need "for money or food"
then there are the professionals who boost high valued items to sell on
the professionals are the ones shops worry about because they are hard to catch.

Meat and things like butter are easily concealable. We had a spate(when I worked in the shop) of thefts of cheese and butter, so much so we removed it and put up a sign about shoplifters and that if anyone wanted it, they had to ask at the counter for it!

There are always reports in our local paper of people being caught stealing meat? Why would they do that, is it easy to sell down the pub or something? There is often custodial sentences too, so it must be repeat offenders.

Meat, alcohol and toiletries (razor blades etc) are the main items that get flogged in pubs.

The number of people in Asda peeling the 'whoops' stickers off and putting them on other things is astonishing. And somehow they seem to think this is not stealing. Pathetic.

I read on the bbc news website that tesco now tag their cheese and meat.

Also as crazy as it sounds i have come across news articles where people have walked out with a tv ,dvd players ,phones and all that type of thing.

One news story even told that some of the shop lifters buy strong magnets online to defeat security tags.

i think the only way they would ever stop shop lifting is if they ever only let 1 person in the shop at a time and watched them like a hawk or close their shop down and operate online and do home delivery's but having said that then it would not stop the staff from stealing.

chelle230 it is 21 days to pay and only if the goods were under £100 apparently?

I can't remember how it works, been a while since I was a manager and dealt with it directly, so not sure how things have changed. but where I work it's usually cheese, alcohol, joints of meat (the usual items everywhere now).

we had a major incident this morning where a shoplifter, who had been arrested Saturday (after trying his luck Friday and getting away with nothing) was back out and came in again today.
got very violent towards the staff, after they stopped him again for stealing alcohol.
he's been in 4 times in 4 days, and keeps coming back. he will get a barring letter, but even then it doesn't stop them, they just get done for trespassing instead of theft
