shoplifting asda

i have been in asda many times, when i do my shopping ,
9 times out of 10 someone sets the alarms off everyone looks around and the security check the persons bags and receipt etc.
Most of the time its just the staff who forgot or could not be bothered to de tag the items.
I have seen people get caught and frog marched to the security office.
My question is what happens to these people when they get caught?
one bloke got caught for not scanning a item at the self checkout and bagging it the other day.
From what i have heard is that they get searched taken to a room their details get taken down then they get a letter weeks later from RLP Demaning 100,s in costs and damages
or if the police get caught they get cautioned fined some times spend the night in jail and if they carry on they get banned from entering the shops.

serial shoplifters can, and do, receive prison sentences.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Was reading online paper ages ago that said it is a fine if police are called if you admit guilt, if you do not it goes to court.
If you do it again, then it goes to court.
My eldest 'borrowed' from a shop once(did not understand) I was the colour of beetroot going back in(discovered their freebie a few minutes later) as the sales assistant knew me from school! She was chilled about it thankully ad just remarked they had bad taste!0 -
I have friend that used to steal. He once stole when i was with him and i was peeved because even though i did nothing i could have been dragged in to it for being there when he did it. "never knew he stole until that day"
Ever since then i been trying to understand ya know what makes people like that tick and why they would carry on doing it even after they are caught,.
The only logical explanation i can think of is that the punishment is so small that it encourages them to still do it. But who knows.
When i was 13 - 14 i stole once "used to break multi packs of crisp open to get the free tazos out of there. What made me tick was that i did it because i was fedup of having the same tazos and waiting for another week to get new ones
so i thought sod it and i did it once. Felt really bad and never did it again
even thought i was never caught i would never have done it again.:A0 -

I think different people shoplift (or thieve or take drugs or various other things I could mention here) for a variety of different reasons, the fact they have chosen to do what they have done/or continue to do is almost a concidence.
I'd imagine reasons stem from needing the money/to save the money through to a power trip (apparently people who have the money to pay do this alot- I read in an issue of Marie Claire, they get a 'buzz' out of it) through to people wanting the attention for many reasons- negative attention is better then no attention, or they use it as a form of self abuse....as many people there are who shoplift there are each individual reasons.
It took me a few years with my own mental health problems (an eating disorder) to work out that as many people as I know who have the disorder each have their own personal reasons for remaining there or fighting the health system which tries to piece them back together. I'd imagine the individualistic aspect also continues into many other forms of self abuse and abuse of other systems, rules or relationships/people. Best way to find the answer to your question is to speak to the individual, each I think will be different and give a totally different point of view or different set of circumstances
Unfortunetly part of life.
Sorry OP -didn't really answer your question!
I can tell you from my own experience (I used to work in a fashion store) that when we did find a shoplifter, they were taken into the office by the manager, police were called. The manager would call their family if they were under 16 (I think- could have been 18) and she'd take a photo of them and "ban" them from the store. Though the volume of new staff we had it was hard to keep this inplace and although the manager would have been in her rights to call the police if the person returned, she'd always be too busy. -But incase anyone else is reading, I think this is just poor management and do not go back into a store if you have been banned (or advise anyone else to do the same) as I think the person doing so could end up arrested and fined.
There are notices on many store walls saying "Civil prosecution" or similar, meaning if you take something the store can make you pay and then make you pay for any mess you caused (eg staff time), I was taught this at school and it was about 15 years ago though so no idea if they still do this.0 -
I think many people shoplift (the ones who have money to pay for their goods) as it gives them a buzz, I sort of experienced this recently with the Tesco tomato glitch, where I was scanning 9 boxes of tomatoes and a pack of 12 andrex loo rolls/2 boxes whiskers cat food and paying 7p, it gave me and the OH such a buzz we were giggling like school kids, but I would never shoplift0

I don't usually comment on threads started on the wrong boards but this one is quite ironic.
A shoplifting thread on the shop but don't drop board...priceless.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. i dont work in a supermarket, although i work in a clothes store. We get a hell of a lot of people stealing but unless we have watched them 100% of the time in person and have left the shop without paying we have to phone the police. we arent allowed to search them, or their bags unless they are holding them open.
Most of the people that are caught do it for a living, ie steal the clothes to sell them on to people.
Get the occasional teenagers doing it and they are usually the ones that get caught and marched home by the police.0 -
There are always reports in our local paper of people being caught stealing meat? Why would they do that, is it easy to sell down the pub or something? There is often custodial sentences too, so it must be repeat offenders.Booo!!!0

In our shop we have security, so they do most of the work with shoplifters. our shop is located in a prime spot, and we get several shoplifters a day.
the police can give on the spot £80 penalties, if they have the money to pay the fine (which they never do) they can go home pending court appearance.
if not, they usually get a night in the cells, then released on bail pending court.
we also use the civil recovery scheme, which means the store doesn't lose out, we claim back through the courts: the value of the items stolen, plus wage costs of anyone involved, ie. the security guards and any staff member who helped with the incident, for the duration they were taken away from their other duties, the offender pays this.
we do have repeat offenders who have ended up in prison, but usually when released they end up back in shoplifting the very day they're released.
Nice shop I work in, I know!!!0 -
chelle230 it is 21 days to pay and only if the goods were under £100 apparently?0
