Try putting one type of plant in all the varying degrees of shade in your garden, the less sun the longer the growing period, also growbags can be used where there is no soil. Up against a south facing wall is great for tomatoes.
The only thing that is constant is change.

As a result of my need to grow better veggies, my relationship with Mrs OK took a turn for the worse at the weekend. On Saturday morning I went down to the garden centre on the scrounge for pots and just had to call in for a nosy around.

I took the opportunity to ask about Rockdust and the guy had never even heard of it! But on the way out I spied a rather large bucket of chicken pellets and duly grabbed it as it was on offer. Grabbed a load of free pots and set off home.

I immediately set to work on a lovely warm day distributing the pellets about the garden but didn't realise the pong these would give off over the rest of the weekend. What a scorcher of a weekend and ideal for sitting out, but no matter where in the garden she sat, there was no safety from the smell.

As for those of you worried about the number of tomato plants you have, breathe easier - I have about 45 now in my 6 x 6 greenhouse, never mind cucumbers and courgettes and peppers etc etc.

I dread to think where this will go in years to come but I never pay attention to myself when planting time comes and you vaguely recall having said to yourself "I won't be planting as many seeds next year".

We have got a small garden, as well.
We have a 5 tier mini greenhouse, a 4 tier open wrought iron stand and about 8 large tubs, 2 hanging baskets and the kitchen window sill, all with plants on them.
When I see some new seeds and I ask my OH whether we should get them, he looks at me and says, we've run out of soil.
It's worse then buying shoes and handbags.

Its better than shoes and handbags - you cannot eat them! As for the tomatoes well they are different kinds that I am growing - from teeny tiny to mammoth sized. I am thinking of doing a box scheme for my mates, the charge will cover the cost of pots for next years tomato plants cos yer know there are going to be more!

This morning I found out what I had planted in mystery tub no.1 ( on Saturday) some beans were showing a 1/4 inch sprout this morning - this afternoon they are 2 inches high!!!!!

Think I had better start saving jars for all my tomato sauce. I am dying to try 'box car willie' tomatoes because I love the name but they can grow 1 pound weight toms:eek:

I will definitely be making tomato sauce (I made loads last year) and tomato soup and chutneys... I'm still eating my strawberry jam and sun dried tomatoes from last year

I am defintely going to have get a man in to dig out my hedge which goes all the way down one side of my garden.

Am so glad that I am not alone with my problem :) The way I see it I will probably lose half of tomatoes to neglect or bugs so maybe it will be managable in the end?

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

Unfortunately, I have an added problem. On top of being an avid veg grower I am also an avid forager and I had to invest in a spare chest freezer last summer to accomodate all the fruit I was picking!! I have had an enormous stash of berries - sloes, elders, rowan, blackberries, bilberries and wild pears frozen in tupper boxes. I have spent the winter making jams, chutneys, jellies, pies and crumbles with it all. I still have a lot left but am determined to get through it all before I start foraging again in mid summer!! Is there a cure for this addiction?!

This is my first year, i bought loads of seeds last year when Wilkies were almost giving them away and never thought about what may grow, all weekend i've been repotting in my greenhouse, there must be 100 lettuce, Tomorrow i'm starting to sort the tomato plants.
Well maybe i'll learn that these tiny little seeds in the packets get bigger.

I would love to forage but I really don't know what to look for... except blackberries... I can recognise those!
