Update Google Nexus One and Android 2.2 (Froyo) - Instructions

CAUTION: Do not attempt the instructions in this thread if you do not understand them, or do not wish to take responsibility for your own actions.

Earlier today, the Android 2.2 update was activated for the Google Nexus One phones given out to the press. The OTA update has not yet been rolled out for "off the shelf" Nexus Ones, but this does not mean it can't be installed, as the URL to download the update is active.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/22/android-2-2s-froyo-goodness-hitting-the-nexus-one-already/

This information applies only to the Nexus One and not to any other Android phones.

If you wish to install this update, the instructions are below (this only works on non-rooted phones):

1. Download the Froyo update from https://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip
(Note: Firefox, and probably IE, will complain this is an unsecured connection because it's over https without encryption, but check the URL - it is from google.com)

2. Rename the file to "update.zip" and put it on your SD card (not in any folder).

3. Turn off your phone. Turn it back on holding the trackball down.

4. Follow the instructions and select "bootloader" from the menu.

5. Select "recovery".

6. Phone will reboot and show a picture of an android next to an exclamation mark. Press the power button and the volume up button at the same time.

7. Select "Apply sdcard:update.zip" (using the trackball).

8. Wait for the phone to install the update and reboot (~5 mins).

If you don't understand these instructions, just wait for the OTA update to arrive, it probably won’t be long. If you have a brand new HTC Desire, wait longer. If you have any other Android phone, wait much longer. If you have an iPhone.... *smirk*.

Hope this helps the three other people with Nexus Ones.

If in doubt, do not attempt to follow these instructions. If you break something, cry to your mother, not me. My Froyo is working fine (and fast!).

Thanks for the post.....How's it feeling on the N1?

Wouldn't it work for the desire, but just mean you'd lose Sense UI?

It's much faster. Google we're boasting 2x-5x faster, and it looks like it wasn't just hype.

Only problem so far is Lookout Mobile Security app has randomly crashed on me four times... it must need an update.

TBH I don't know what would happen if you installed this on a Desire. The only thing I'm certain of is as it's stock Android you would lose the Sense UI. The instructions might be different too. But would you need to root to install this? Can you update from 2.1 + Sense to 2.2? I don't know...

If someone has a Desire and some balls, feel free to enlighten the rest of us :D

Well, I assume the Desire is much like the Nexus One... since it bascially is the Nexus One with an optical trackball, slightly better touchscreen and Sense UI.

If I was going to try this, I'd try the instructions above first. Probably the worst you could do is screw up the software on your phone, lose your local data and have to restore it. There's no risk of rooting your phone and voiding your warrenty, as this is a separate process and has plenty of warning screens.

However, if it is possible, there must be proper instructions out there somewhere. I'd look for and follow those, personally.

    Well....Unfortunately it doesn't work:

    E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

    -- Install from sdcard...
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package..
    Verifying update package...
    E:failed to verify whole-file signature
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

According to Android Forums there is no way of getting 2.2 on A Desire at the moment. However they expect there to be an unofficial version available next week or the week after.

HTC have announced that the Desire is one of the phones they will be releasling an update for in the 2nd half of this year.

With the iPhone 4G being released soon I'm hoping they'll get the update out quickly to help keep the Desire competitive.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

It is a Nexus one without a colour changing trackball, same touch screen and a naff tinkered with UI called sense.

The best thing to do with a Desire is root it and install Cyanogen Mod turning it into a super-phone uber device. It's wings are sadly clipped out of the box :(

I have a Nexus One. You will never realise the potential of these devices until you Root. It voids your warrantee - so - where's the fun in worrying about that?

Would that allow a Froyo update on a Desire?

Potentially yes. I helped my mate root his Desire and it is really good running cyanogen Rom. When you root you save a backup of the phone in the state it is now so you can restore it if you want.

The Desire is trickier to root than the N1. The N1 being more for Android geeks. That said I have the HTC sense keyboard and weather on my N1. The rest of my phone beingvanilla Android.
