Some brilliant tips on this thread. We are starting to move 2 weeks today but will be in a different position to most in that our house will still be on the market and open to viewings so I cannot store boxes in a room. Today I am starting to sort cupboard by cupboard and shelf by shelf ie I will empty one shelf, wipe and de clutter stuff and then go to the next shelf down and do the same so that we will just take all that is left. We are able to move a bit at a time, whilst leaving this house looking lived-in

5 years ago we did the massive de-clutter after 24 years in the same house. I started with ebay and charity shops etc but ended up with a skip because it was just too much to cope with. It was shattering and we lived on paracetamol then as it makes your back and joints ache, well we did have 2 stables and a tack room, all still full of horse stuff and other storage, plus a loft and garden shed and a 4 bed house. Never ever again we said. Well we are not minimalistic now but lots better than that but it is still daunting

    2) Also make sure you have a box of essentials to go with you - tea, milk, snacks, cups, loo roll, washing up liquid, cloths and whatever else floats yer boat lol! Make sure you know where this is kept as you WILL get exhausted and WILL need your batteries recharging with refreshments etc. The last thing you want is to be rummaging around for glasses/cups to pour yourself a drink!

Don't forget the lecky kettle. Or even two.

Some good advice on de-cluttering. It's hard work but very cathartic. I've viewed some houses recently and they all seemed quite cluttered-it certainly didn't put me off (as I'm so used to living with clutter!)

I am shattered. I have spent hours on the final de-cluttering. Sorting into give away, throw away, def keep and keep unless I change my mind. I have done 11 large kitchen drawers and 3 dressing table drawers, a bedroom cupboard and 2 fairly large bedside drawers and a large bathroom cabinet. I should say it has taken a good 5-6 hours

I can just see the result of all this this evening: my eyes will be going and I`ll be nodding off at some silly hour

    Well done Kittie!
I have done 4 more drawers & the top of a (very) cluttered unit so far today. Just going to tackle a mound of paperwork next - bank statements from 2005, that sort of thing!

i certainly have since this massive move and massive decluttering.. i swore never to have to go through it all again.....

I also swore never to go through it again!

I've had 2 skips in this house alone and only been here 4 years....

Have decided now that every week I MUST throw/ebay/charity shop at least one unused item..... now where's my hubby....!
If you want to go fast, go alone
If you want to go far, go with friends

Document storage boxes from stationery suppliers. Usually supplied flat packed, get the decent ones and they'll swallow loads of heavy stuff. They come with lids, so you can stack them easily, and when you're done they fold flat so you can keep them for next time (and clutter up the house with them!)
  • I've just packed up my one bedroom flat - and my tip is - How every many boxes you think you need - triple that number and add 10 !!!!!
I never new how much stuff could be hoarded in a 1bed flat - it was alarming !!!
I started the decluttering process about a month ago (am moving this week) - managed to fill 1 whole bin bag with bank statements alone - I had statements dating back to 1986!!!!! Have had 2 trips to the tip (with a 3rd pending), have taken bags of stuff to charity shop and have offered goods on freecycle.
I'm probably still keeping stuff I should be chucking - for example my video collection and my childhood teddybears - but I did throw all my cassette tapes!

A way of motivating yourself is to think about how much you are looking forward to be in your new home - but the only way to get there is to pack up your stuff!!!!

    Good luck with the packing!
