Removal company quote

Hello, I got a quote from a removal company to ship my things abroad. I sent them a list of what I was taking and they sent me a quote. They said sign the quote and send a deposit to secure the price which i did. I paid in full before they collected my things. They are now saying that i have to pay an additional £5,750 as I had more than I listed. Yet I sent pretty much what I listed, are they allowed to do this, I have offered to pay half as a compromise but they are not budging and now charging me £50 a week storage. Where do I go from here?

Huge amount of further details necessary. How much more stuff? What was the original quote? What does the contract say? How long ago did they collect? How was the stuff going to be shipped?

Equaliser is right, more information required.

But, you say you sent 'pretty much' what you listed - which is not the same as 'nothing more, nothing less' than you listed.

Hi Polly, thanks for the reply. Pretty much means, an extra 3ft book case and a 6ft head board, 2 coffee tables but did not take a 6ft running machine which was included in the quote. Everything is due to be shipped to the states. Basically, i filled in a room by room quote, at the bottom was an extra box with additional info, it seems they quoted me on this and not the room by room quote. To me this seems like their error, but they say its not.
They collected my things 4 weeks ago(which they didnt turn up on 3 pre-arranged days, which cost me time and money from work) and are holding things until i instruct them further, at a cost of £50 per week.
They are now trying to charge me an extra £5700, but i have offered to pay half, which i think is fair. They are not budging. I wouldnt have gone with them if they were going to charge that price as i had 2 other quotes which were cheaper than the additional £5700, hope this helps!!

Which removal company is it? I ask this as some companies are members of trade organisations, some of the organisations offer a mediation / ombudsman service

They don't appear to be a member of BAR or NGRS which are the main two associations, interestingly they mention they will only subcontract work out to members of these organisations or other approved companies for removals to America

The thing is its a quote so not a fixed price. So as far as I understand they can charge you more/ Although I would have thought you would have a good fight stating how inaccurate the quote was

Wgat does the small print say on the paperwork you signed?

I think maybe you've got that the wrong way round, Cyberbob.

    From a Government website...
A quotation is a fixed price offer that can't be changed once accepted by the customer. This holds true even if you have to carry out much more work than you expected. If you think this is likely to happen, it makes more sense to give an estimate. You can also specify in the quotation precisely what it covers, and that variations outside of this will be subject to additional charges.
An estimate is an educated guess at what a job may cost - but it isn't binding. To take account of possible unforeseen developments, you should provide several estimates based on various circumstances, including the worst-case scenario. This will prevent your customer from being surprised by the costs.
  • OP did you genuinely not know the quote was wrong. £5700 is a big difference.

How much did they charge you originally?
