Trouble with taking them back in a different packaging is the bar code on the packaging is likely to be different to the one on your receipt.Could be embarrassing to explain how that happened.Wish you luck getting it sorted though.

Use the receipt you got when you bought the new ones

I know I'm stupid but my wife will kill me if I can't find an answer to this problem.

    Why don't you challenge her........

Tell her M&S refused to replace them. If she's anything like me, she'll take that as a challenge to take them back herself.

Alternatively, get your sewing machine out and make some matching curtains out of them ;) or some scatter cushion covers........:T

The store will then presumably end up with a product they cant sell-because its in the wrong packaging. So the OP will have got the cash back and the shop has something unsaleable.I think the Op could be on dodgy ground here-even though the OP has lost out,so has the shop.I think its still probably classed as deception.
The shop could still sell them, but it would have to be at a reduced price if they didn't have the correct packaging. My local m&s sometimes sells stuff separated from its packaging at aout 20% off.
I'm getting all nostalgic for M&S' heyday when you only needed a receipt or barcode to return anything, even months after it was bought, and their sizes were absolutely consistent even for bras, and virtually all their clothes were machine washable without having to "wash dark colours separately"... they've changed everything that set them apart from other retailers, and now they wonder why they're not making as much profit as they used to!

even months after it was bought,

lol I remember taking a £5 kitchen spatula back after it broke 5 years after I got it! :rotfl:They didn't even flinch!

    Thinking about it........

Maybe that's why their profits took a massive dive :o

You could unstitch a little bit of one of the edges take it back saying its faulty!! LOL,How deceitful that would be though!!!
Then change the other the following day in different store!!
Or face up to it and be honest which honesty is really the best policy!!

Yes the store could sell them, but how is that fair to make them lose out?Surely,if we expect stores to treat us fairly we should do the same to them.Just my humble opinion.

Biggar - Let's face it, even if they had been the right size, they wouldn't have been the colour and design that your wife wanted. Know your place! :)

As a wife I couldnt agree with you more!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
    I love this site
  • Wow, I am shocked that M&S are being so fussy about this. Go on a different day and ask to speak to the manager. There should be no problem if you have the receipt and you only want to swap the item. I would suggest you try going to a normal cashier and asking if you can swap them first. If it was me, I would let you ;-)

Unfortunately I spoke with a manager and she would not budge.
I really wouldn't mind if they didn't refund me in full if they had to re-sell them at a loss.
£80 is a lot for me to lose but I suppose I'll have to accept that.
My wife won't really kill me but she will raise her eyes heavenwards. She will realise that I was trying to be helpful but £80 loss is quite a lot.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help.
