Involving the school who undoubtably have a "no electronic games" policy will probably just cause them to re-visit the afterschool club's policies and have them enforced for strictly.

It's probably the school who have instructed the Afterschool club to take a stand in the first place when it's been brought up at a club meeting.

Nope. After school club is run by the local council - nothing to do with the school. It just happens to borrow school property and some of the teaching assistants work there (presumably for extra pay).

No - electronic games are not banned.
  • I'm not convinced that it's entirely beneficial for a young child to play on their own on one of these things rather than making the most of shared time with other kids. I'm also not convinced that a PSP is an ideal plaything for one so young either. He's likely to learn much more valuable lessons about getting along with others and sharing with them if he's actually interacting with them. I think your after-school people are right to discourage its use there.

Not interested in your opinion about whats beneficial for my child.

so he can learn social skills in the after school club instead of hiding n a corner, so he doesnt get it used by others, because that is the obvious solution. Why not?

Why did you post on a public forum then?
Maybe your child is not the only one needing to learn some social skills.

I agree it wouldn't be my first choice of toy for a 6 year old and my 5 year old doesn't get to play consoles, the issue here isn't about criticising the parent on what they give their child to play with, the issue is the school. They have allowed the OP child to take his PSP to after school club for however long he's been attending - they should be dealing with the taking of another child's property first. If my daughter kept snatching something from another child, she'd be dealt with, not the child who's done nothing wrong.

I've seen other parents punishing both parties for something one child has done wrong i.e snatched a toy from other child, both start squabbling, toy gets taken away altogether - same situation imo no matter how old the kids are.

Thank You. I dont think I asked for anyones opinion on the right or wrongs of playing for with a PSP, did I? So please keep them to youself.

    Think we've got a few tree-huggers on this forum !!!! :D:D:D:D:D

My 2 girls go to before/after school club and I do not let them take anything like that. I know some kids take their DS's etc. But the school have toys, drawing stuff, craft stuff, they do have a PS2 as well which they are allowed to play on sometimes.

I would prefer them to use the school facilities, as that's what I pay for. And I certainly wouldn't want my child to just sit in a corner and be glued to a games console the whole time.

My advice is, leave the PSP at home.

Well, they've banned your son's because it was causing trouble between the children and personally I think they've made the right decision. I hope your child gets more out of interacting with his peers than he did by being apart and solitary. There will be plenty of time for him and his beloved PSP at other times at home.

Makes no difference! And I assume he's in school before the club starts?

No parent in their right mind would send that in let alone want their child to be sat playing on a games console instead of interacting or doing other things.Jeez!

Did you read the initial post at all?

I dont think I'm discussing the pros and cons of a 6 yr old playing with a PSP, am I? Either in after school club or not?

Quite why people have to get involved and go off on a tangent with their opinions on a different issue, I dont know...
