Is the end of the financial year, next April 2011?
If Im making around £50 per month MS and between now and next April I make £550, roughly how much tax does that work out at?
Mhairi.
You will need to register as self employed within 3 months and apply for a NI small exemptions certificate (from class 2 contrib).
As to the end of the financial year, when did you start mystery shopping? If after March end of financial year will effectively be next April. You will need to file a return by 31st October (if online) or 31st Jan (if Hardcopy)0 -

That's up to you, but in your position I think I would apply for an exemption since you will already be paying NI through your job

Depends on when you started MSing. If you started before 6th April 2010 then you should complete a tax return now (or if you do it online you have until January I believe). If you started after 6th April 2010 then you will do a tax return next April to cover you for the 2010/2011 tax year.

Impossible to say - if you're making £50 per month, is that pure profit, or are you saying you are earning £50 in fees, and your costs still have to be taken out of that figure? I would work on a guesstimate of about 20% of your profit going in tax... but it really depends on your costs.
If you did a job where the fee was £10 for example, you would then take your costs out of that, for example, printing (maybe 6 pages @ 6p per page = 36p costs), then mileage to and from the job, (say 12 miles @ 40p per mile = £4.80 costs). So the fee is £10 but it's cost you £5.16 to do the job, so your profit is the difference = £4.84. So you would only be liable for tax on the £4.84.
Sorry if that's all stuff you already know, just wanted to try to explain it clearly.
Mhairi.

Thanks for all your replies.
I only started in May so next April will be my financial year.
The jobs Ive already done are from £2.50-£10 fee per job, I have not taken into account printing or petrol costs. I have taken a copy of the spreadsheet someone else posted up to log the jobs I have done and am doing at present, so that will help come next year.

Alright who's pinched all the jobs
I've only got one on my calendar for this week.
I know! There's really nothing about, is there?
I mean, it's nice to have a break, as I really do need to make sure I keep up with home admin and housework as well, but it would be nice to have some stuff booked up! All I've got booked are a couple of GfK emails/phone calls and a Gap chicken for 1/7!I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

I've got nothing booked in full stop. Just my regular audits and photos. Oh I do have a cinema check late July. I need to stop being so picky.0

I've just got my regular audits, a few chicken shops, a couple of phone shops and some supermarket tech ones. Going to enjoy the break to be honest.
Just to cheer everyone up though we will probably get the go ahead later in the week to start crisps again so least that's something to do :rotfl:0 -

I've not got much on now either. I had a bank for tomorrow but have had to release it as we are down to one car this week (DP's car broke down on Sat) and can't pop out in my lunch hour now. Got a phone shop to do after work tomorrow (rescheduled from Sat because of the above car problems!) and a phone call tomorrow evening. That's it...
Typically there are a fair few jobs showing that I could do... if only I a) was available to go out of town this week and b) had a car in working order... As neither of those apply at the moment I suppose I should stop looking!!0 -

I don't think I have done one of these unless its the ones with the MS followed by the availability audit.
However are you sure it is looking for 15 apples and its not "15X. Apples" as this is how they often reference the questionnaire numbers. I might be wrong they could be looking for 15 apples but generally for availability it is as long as there is one or more products to purchase at the time of checking then its a pass.
Hope this helps0
