I see the point but don't think thats very fair. If you were going into town for the purpose of a job but did a couple of extra things while there it just makes sence instead of going twice. The question is, would you have gone to do the extra bits if you hadn't been going for the job?

If you would not have taken the trip if you hadn't been going for the job than i would claim, as without the job you would not have incurred the expenses.

Yeah, I think it's a messed up rule, but having been told it directly from an HMRC employee, I follow it, as I *really* don't want to be audited, and if it ever happens I *really* don't want to be in the wrong. As I was told by someone at Business Link "Tax Law is the only area you are presumed guilty until you can prove your innocence".

I may be a *tiny* bit paranoid about tax :)

Ah, not true. You are automatically guilty for speeding (zapped by the gatso) unless you prove your innocent.
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!
  • I'd check with the taxman- when claiming for fuel the example I was given was that if you were taking business expenses to the bank you could claim, but if whilst you were there you stopped in Tesco's for a loaf of bread, then you couldn't claim it. I'd guess the rules are the same for public transport.

How are they going to know you stopped in Tesco's though?

You are automatically guilty under Health and safety laws unless you can prove you did everything feasible to foresee and prevent accidents. A lot of ink gets wasted on hypothetical backside covering.

Bit of a thick question. Just seen a visit on RE which I want to pick up. However, the last day to do it was yesterday. I've answered the questions but there is no date to select. Does anyone know if RE have a number to contact them on a weekend?

I think it's a case of being the first person to call on Monday morning. Take the job ID number and ring as soon as they open to bag the job. 9.00am i believe.

There was a job showing like this for me this morning. I clicked on the contact us on the right hand side of the page and asked what the date for the job was. Within 5 mins, the job had been corrected, I did not get a message back myself though.

Thanks MISSSARAHLEIGH and S-A-H- I have just done that. Have emailed my fave RE contact person too as he sometimes replies to emails over the weekend. Just that in the past, they have called me over the weekend to ask if I wanted to do certain urgent jobs. I want the cookies :-) LOL.

Well, if they do an audit you have to provide bank statements, so if you pay by card...

I have not got a camera phone so have been turning down jobs requiring pictures of the shop. Would it be too risky using my normal digital camera?
