  • Never smoked until my first daughter was 3, but she was born prem and weighed an incredible 1lb 13 oz ..2nd child had stopped smoking 18 months before he was born again prem, at 27 weeks weighing 2lb 8oz, 3rd child i smoked until i was 14 weeks, i didnt realise i was pregnant and hadnt planned to be. he wasnt prem (all but 3 weeks early) and weighed what was a whopping 8lb 9oz
All children fine and healthy no problems.
Would NEVER have smoked with the 3rd if i had even an inclination i was pregnant.
Well done for giving up. :T

i am and always will be a recovering drinker (use to drink a litre of vodka a day) and i had just about got to the point of stopping that when i found out i was preggers with my son (now 2 years old), i gave up smokin about half way through carrying him. with this 1 i'm not givin up smoking as i feel i wouldn't be able to cope and find it way to stressful . not good i know but i find it is the lesser of the 2 evilsand drinking while preggers would do way more harm to my unborn than the fags.i am trying to cut down but again i'm finding this hard.
nasty mum i know but there u go. not all of us are perfect.

my son is a very happy and healthy ickle lad

smoking while pregnant is unbeliveably selfish, and anyone who does it doesent deserve kids.

same with smoking in front of kids or in the car with the kids in.

poison yourself by all means but leave the little ones alone they have done you no harm.

i'm not saying i am pleased with myself, if fact i'm not but i would rather have a fag when i'm stressed than reach for a drink or god forbid take it out on my 2 year old. there are worse parents on this planet than those who smoke.
it will be difficult for those who have never had a smoking or drinking habbit to understand and i would never expect them to but i just cope the best way that i can like many others.

Marlboro man (deceased from smoking) whilst on a film shoot for new advert noticed none of the directors of Marlboro smoked. He asked why and got the reply.
We leave that to the poor the stupid and the blacks
In these days of political correctness they would have been shot for a comment like that but it shows the contempt for the consumer by the directors of a massive money making organization. Roll on July the 1st

Why do people always say they smoke because it relieves stress??? it's actually the lack of nicotine that initially CAUSES the stress, making you anxious because you then have to have another ciggy to replace that nicotine level!

I smoked for 7 years, and finally gave up because i realised that the only reason people smoke is because they're either insecure, or bored. I struggled for 2 years to give up, and it was embarassing admitting that i was weaker than a 10cm nicotine stick!!

Cigarettes are nothing but a clever ploy by the cigarette companies to screw insecure and bored people out of lots of money! They saw a way to take advantage out of vunerable people, and they took it!

I plan to have kids in the near-ish future, so wanted to quit smoking long before that happens.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I used to smoke and gave up using the Allen Carr method - this is what he describes as the smoking trap - you THINK the cigarette is doing something for you, all it does is get you back to the state you should be in as a non smoker.

My mum smokes and is amazed that I managed to give up - not because I was a terrible chain smoker, but because she cannot imagine not smoking - she asks what do I do after a meal? Well, nothing, I am satisfied, I am now a non smoker and non smokers don't need cigarettes. What do I do to get a break from work? I do what non smokers do, make a cup of tea or go and chat to someone, or go outside like I used to - just without the cigarette.

I smoked for twelve years, so I don't say any of this lightly, but smoking is an absolute joke, the only trick to giving up is realising that you are NOT an idiot but are someone who got caught in the trap - once you've realised that you can be free.

As for smoking out of boredom - what's interesting about a cigarette?

I am NOT condemning pregnant women who smoke - I am talking about smoking in general.

I am 19 weeks pregnant myself and know how guilty EVERY move makes you feel - I've eaten soft boiled eggs, a bite here and there of brie, whilst on holiday last week I had a beer on three separate nights, and I had a couple of glasses of wine too. Bad mother of the year?

Do be aware that the effect of smoking is only around 50% as damaging as being Vitamin D insufficient and most of us totally ignore that danger.

The work Bruce Hollis was doing that showed those taking 6400iu vit d daily had 70% fewer colds than those on placebo was actually with pregnant and lactating subjects.

Assessment of dietary vitamin D requirements during pregnancy and ...

Nutritional vitamin D status during pregnancy: reasons for concern

High prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in black and white pregnant women residing in the northern United States and their neonates.

This should not be taken as imply it is safe to smoke while pregnant but keeping your vitamin d status high, by using an effective strength supplement and getting regular (as possible) limited exposure to sunshine will have twice the beneficial effect as that achieved by giving up the fags.

It will also (if sustained for 4 yrs) reduce your all cancer risk by 60% but it will be June before I can link to that research.

  • I always saw myself as a 'professional' smoker, i didnt do it just because i was addicted, i did it because i enjoyed it... it was one of my favourite things
and thats why i struggled to give up so many times
i loved my fags and missed every single one i tried to cut down on...

until one day in sept 99 i found myself sat on the bathroom floor watching a pregnancy test turn positive, i stubbed out my cigarette and didnt have another one for about 3 years... i was weak to start again but it was around the time i started getting a regular social life back and would just have one when i was drunk... and of course that lead to going back to 20 a day,

last year i told my non smoking boyfriend that i would give up before i was 30 and as you can see by my signature, i finally managed it last october.... but thats because i wanted to do it.

i HATE to see an obviously pregnant smoker, its so disrespectful...
not so long ago i was sat in a cafe on a table next to a pregnant girl who was moaning to her friend about not being able to have a runny yolk in her fried egg, and complaining about the pate, liver, ice cream, peanut butter etc rules.... then finished her meal and lit a fag!
why worry about the minimal risks involved eating a few bites of egg yolk when your force feeding your child formaldahyde amongst other things!

I gave up smoking before I fell pregnant with my daughter who is now 6 but started again (foolishly)a couple of years ago. However, I never smoke around her or other children. Cannot bear children smelling of smoke, never mind the damage it could do to them.

Considering the sacrifices you have to make for children, sleepless nights, no money, no energy, a 24/7 dependant for many, many years, I honestly feel if you are unwilling to too selfish to give up smoking for 9 months then perhaps you aren't ready for the responsibility of children.
