Smoking while pregnant anyone?

If your baby was born with a defect could you hand on heart say you played no part in it. The guilt would be bad enough - I am aware that babies are still born with defects even when parents do everything right. Think about it.
Before anyone quotes on this - I do have a birth defect and have to live with it.
I presume that your statement relates to smokers only!!:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0 -
Smoking while pregnant is bad enough but smoking in front of children shows them how pathetically weak willed you are and easy to control. And yes they will take advantage.Who I am is not important. What I do is.0

I haven't read through the thread but I'm 7 months pregnant and wanted to say that my mum didn't completely give up smoking when expecting me and I had no ill effects - or so I thought, until I developed asthma in my early twenties! I have absolutely no family history of allergies whatsoever and was breastfed, so I'm fairly sure it was the cigs. However, at least when we were growing up she never ever smoked around us. Personally I don't smoke and neither does my baby's dad, but the idea of doing something that's proven beyond all question to be seriously damaging to your child both in the immediate short term and in later life is insane to me. I'm not maternal at all, I don't even like children much, but I feel responsible enough for this baby that I haven't touched alcohol and I've tried to live healthily. If growing a baby inside you isn't enough to make you quit then I don't know what is - lung cancer maybe?!0

I'm not sure whether smoking is really, really bad in pregnancy. What is clear is the increased risk of heart disease, lung disease and cancer that occurs later in life. Use the pregancy as a good reason to stop and be around for your children as long as possible.0

Recently, ive known 4 women have babies - 3 of them are smokers and carried on during their pregnancies, the 4th is a non smoker.
All 3 ladies who smoked had their babies early, and all were tiny and needed help before being allowed home. The one who didnt smoke had an 8lb something baby, who is now double the size of the other 3.
I couldnt say the smoking def caused the difference, as there are so many different things that can affect babies, but it does seem a coinsidence (sp) that it has happened this way!!!0 -
Got to admit I smoked when pregnant. No it is not a good thing. now we know that lying babies on their stomachs to sleep is bad we wouldn't do it. But being addicted to cigs is an addiction very hard to break.. and I personally don't know anyone who woudn't fancy one occasoinally even years after they gave up. I din't smoke when I had the first 2 kids, I din't start till I was about 25, and looking back how stupid was that. Smoked through the last 3 and TBh the last one was small birthweight and had heart murmer and although she seems fine now, she does seem to catch every cough and cold going.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

Although I'm not a smoker, my Mum, Dad and two sisters smoked like there was no tomorrow UNTIL my Mum had a heart attack and then a triple heart bypass! I'm proud to say they have all given up (and my clothes no longer stink to high heaven after visiting
). I'm now 22 weeks pregnant and am glad they gave up as I would be in an difficult situation about whether to leave the baby with them in that environment.
But, the point I want to make is when I had my miscarriage last year, I had to walk past dozens of fully pregnant women in their dressing gowns smoking outside the maternity hospital as I went in to make sure my womb was empty. I didn't think it was possible to feel any more devasted until then.

Since this is a moneysaving forum what about the cost, wouldnt you rather spend the money on your children Over a lifetime (on average shorter for a smoker) a 20 a day will spend over 100K which is more than some mortgages.
Do you want health or a cancer mortgage?Who I am is not important. What I do is.0 -
This is just my opinion but I find it really bad that people with children smoke. Parents should set an example to children and I don't think smoking around them is very good at all especially in this day and age.
I always think that if children are around parents who smoke they are more likely to do it themselves one day even if its just to try.:rotfl:0
