The work Bruce Hollis was doing that showed those taking 6400iu vit d daily had 70% fewer colds than those on placebo was actually with pregnant and lactating subjects.
No supplements however should EVER be taken in pregnancy without first getting advice from midwife or GP.

Smoking whe pregnant or around children should be illegal in my opinion. I hate seeing pregnant women smoking and I also hate seeing babies and children in the back of cars whilst their parents drive round with the windows up and a cigarette in their mouths. It's disgusting.
And for those who proudly proclaim that they smoked all through their pregnancies and their babies are fine, well done! I hope you are really proud of yourselves!
But next time why not drink heavily too and also drive with no seat belt??
I agree with the above poster that if you can't stop smoking for your baby then maybe you aren't ready to be a parent!

I thought there were contraindications for high doses of Vit D in pregnancy?

I smoked 10 a day up until i found out i was 4 weeks pregnant and i stopped not one after that! I just couldnt bare the thought of my poor unborn child breathing in all that nasty air. I HATE to see pregnant mothers smoking its awful and looks tacky!

If you want to smoke after having a baby then so be it as long as its not around the baby or where the baby sleeps etc etc..

All the mums that say 'i just couldnt i was to stressed' is bull. If you cant give your baby 9 months out of your life then your selfishness will continue when the baby is born.

Its an easy choice to make smoke and give yourself a small amount of disgusting smelling pleasure or let your baby have a clean and safe place to grow. You breath in enough pollution as it is no nned to add to it.

I was in town once when a mother had an obvouisly newborn baby in a carrier on her front whilst she was smoking away! After i quite obvouisly stared for a while her reply was 'What, i didnt smoke when i was pregnant'... Some people!

I commend all those who gave up smoking for your babies! WELL DONE!!

    Risk assessment for vitamin D -- Hathcock et al. 85 (1): 6 ...

Postpartum vitamin D insufficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism in healthy Danish women.

Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy: an ongoing epidemic

High prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in black and white pregnant women residing in the northern United States and their neonates.
In utero or early-life vitamin D deficiency is associated with skeletal problems, type 1 diabetes, and schizophrenia, but the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in U.S. pregnant women is unexplored. We sought to assess vitamin D status of pregnant women and their neonates residing in Pittsburgh by race and season. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured at 4-21 wk gestation and predelivery in 200 white and 200 black pregnant women and in cord blood of their neonates. Over 90% of women used prenatal vitamins. Women and neonates were classified as vitamin D deficient [25(OH)D<37.5 nmol/L], insufficient [25(OH)D 37.5-80 nmol/L], or sufficient [25(OH)D>80 nmol/L]. At delivery, vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency occurred in 29.2% and 54.1% of black women and 45.6% and 46.8% black neonates, respectively. Five percent and 42.1% of white women and 9.7% and 56.4% of white neonates were vitamin D deficient and insufficient, respectively. Results were similar at <22 wk gestation. After adjustment for prepregnancy BMI and periconceptional multivitamin use, black women had a smaller mean increase in maternal 25(OH)D compared with white women from winter to summer (16.0+/-3.3 nmol/L vs. 23.2+/-3.7 nmol/L) and from spring to summer (13.2+/-3.0 nmol/L vs. 27.6+/-4.7 nmol/L) (P<0.01). These results suggest that black and white pregnant women and neonates residing in the northern US are at high risk of vitamin D insufficiency, even when mothers are compliant with prenatal vitamins. Higher-dose supplementation is needed to improve maternal and neonatal vitamin D nutriture.

i have to raise my hands and say that i smoked throughout my 1st pregnancy i had my last cigarette 23/07/03 and my dd was born 24/07/03 and i havent had one since. i didnt give up the day before she was born on purpose as she wasnt actually due until 4 weeks later. i also went on to have another child and he came early too, both of them were good weights aswell. im just thankful they are both healthy :)
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A
  • I am ashamed to admit that I smoked through my pregnancy with my DS. Luckily he was a healthy weight and has not suffered any side effects of my selfish habit. I was under no pressure to give up smoking as both myself & my partner came from families that smoked and my mum smoked when she had me, my nan smoked when she had her etc etc.

Although I have now kicked the habit (4 years ago) I only wish that I had found the strength to do it whilst I was pregnant.

I applaud everyone that has found the strength to give up as its the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life, and for those that have not been able to do it yet as the slogan goes "dont give up giving up"

smoking while pregnant is unbeliveably selfish, and anyone who does it doesent deserve kids.

    .

That is a strong statement, and I agree with you to a certain point, yes, now that we have more facts the damage that smoking can do whilst the mother is pregnant, it is rather selfish for them to carry on smoking.

But years ago, I smoked through my pregnancy, but there wasnt the information there is today.

I was only four pounds 12 ounces when I was born, and my mum smoked and drank, and was a rock and roll dancer, infact when she was 7 months pregnant, she entered a competition and won, I was born small, and still only little as such in todays terms, 5ft 4", and weigh approx eight and half stone and fit as a flea.

I smoked all through my pregnancies :embarasse , my son was 5 pound s7 ounces, he is now 6ft 2" and in the army as fit as a fiddle, my daughter was 5pound 12 ounces, 5ft 8, and a curvey lass.

In those days no one thought it was wrong to smoke, it was the norm, but nowadays the health visitors, the majority of them have never had children, always put the slightest thing down to smoking

It isnt good for a pregnant woman to smoke, but i dont think that they should blame everything on the mother smoking.

And I agree with you, smoking in a car is bl00dy disgusting when you have kids in the back seat, there should be a law against this.
