We are thinking of purchasing the above car which we have seen at a used car dealership, it has done 80,000 miles and is 2003 model. It has towed a caravan, I am a bit concerned about this, I have heard bad things about cars which pull caravans e.g. pull the engine, bad for the axel etc. The car looks and drives well, it will have 12 months MOT and a full service before purchase. I am being silly about this - any advice appreciated.

If you're concerned about it then walk away and find something else. I wouldn't buy a French car of this age and era and would err towards Japanese cars.

If you buy the C5 at least you know it'll stop even if there's a caravan behind it.

Not convinced you could count on a 7 year old Citroen to do anything tbh....

I appreciate the comments but I still dont know what to do, we cant afford a newer car and the car we have at the moment is costly on petrol and road tax, Hyundai Santa Fe.

There are hundreds of thousands of used cars out there, regardless of budget I'm sure you could find better than something French.

    Mondeo? Vectra? Avensis? Primera?

I've never owned a C5, but I've had other french and italian cars, they ran well, cost next to nothing to maintain, and the C5 gets good reviews.
Any car that size is designed to tow caravans, they're usually well looked after and washed every Sunday as well.

You should have no problems as a result of towing a caravan. Check that the clutch operates correctly. Remember that it has towed a caravan maybe 6-10 return journeys per annum for a few hours at a time.

My husband had a Citroen xantia estate when they first came out, only trouble he had in four years was the suspension went down but he managed to drive it with the suspension raised, to get to the garage. Considering the mileage he did I don't think that was bad.
They are nice cars to drive, lovely and comfortable and loads of room they have also in the past been voted tow car of the year. As long as you aren't paying over the odds, you don't mention the price.
