If it's on O2, which the OP's contract is, a new SIM is sent and a PAC is used, as I already said.

It seems to be also possible to use a PAC to move a number directly from an old to a new contract within O2, which didn't use to be the case, as they told me not long ago

is that an 02 thing as ive moved from orange contract to orange payg (and vice versa) and kept the same sim

I have a number attached with PAYG T-Mobile SIM. I tried to have T-Mobile transfer the number to a new 24-month T-Mobile contract I purchased last weekend but they refused because they claim it is a transfer within the same network.

Is there any there anything I could do ?

The OP is changing tariff, not network, and there is no need for a PAC code when migrating from contract to PAYG, or vise versa from PAYG to contract, and the OP could even use the same SIM card once the tariff has been changed.

You only request a PAC code if you wish to change supplier but the OP is staying with the same network.

Networks do not issue PAC codes for migrating between tariffs.

Sorry, but I don't take kindly to being falsely accused of lying

O2 contracts issued me a PAC, and I gave it to O2 Pay & Go, and the number would have been applied to the new SIM card they sent me. But to save time we switched it an active payg one I already had

The text message from O2 Pay & Go, confirming to me I'm moving to O2, and when it will happen, is still on one of my phones.

Maybe it wasn't essential that it was done that way, but that is what happened, and I was transferred to O2 Pay & Go customer services to do it by the contracts retentions team

Besides that, the OP has not actually told us which is the destination network, and might be grateful for suggestions, and would certainly need a PAC for other networks

And as well as that, what I said about transferring a number directly from one contract to another, was told to me by O2 staff. They didn't use to be able to do so, but they can now. But I'm starting to repeat myself ... And they told me this when I ventured a suggestion I might move to a one month Simplicity deal then wait for a Quidco cashback deal to come round again on 12 month Simplicity; I'd be able to move the number using a PAC within O2

I am not making any of this up

    Redux,

I never accused you of lying. In fact, I did not even mention that word, so I cannot even imagine why you would have thought I was.

Having said that, and despite what you have said, I stand by what I have said in my previous posts.

If you are on the same network and you wish to change your tariff within the network, that is from PAYG to contract or as I have said, from Contract to PAYT, you dont need a PAC code since you are still with the same network. Its a simple process of calling Customer Care and saying 'hey, I wish to change my tariff, can you transfer my number to my new tariff.'

    Now do you understand that.

Maybe O2 do it a different way to some other networks, in which case they should make it easier to change tariff and keep the same number within the network.

Since you've got a new contract, have they sent you a new SIM and number too? Where did you purchase the phone? Over the phone/CS 150 or the internet (which count as long distance selling), or in store? If via CS/internet, they do allow you to return phones within 7 or 14 days (can't remember which), but I don't know whether they'll accept used phones.

O2 - A friend of mine received a new SIM card when to pre/post migration with an existing number. I think it's something only O2 do.

OP - If you change service providers, you'll need to terminate your contract and request a PAC code as others have said. If you plan on staying with O2, ask for a post to pre-pay migration but see the above point.

It must be down to the network. I've been able to move from a Vodafone contract to PAYG with the same sim and number.. happened within hours IIRC.

I do understand that you are saying that you know better than detailed descriptions and quotes of empirical fact

... and that you are refusing to fully acknowledge that the OP is actually talking about O2, or give pragmatic advice for the real world, but would rather try pushing water uphill

The process I experienced was simple in the extreme, so I refuse to accept your suggestion that I should have argued at length with O2 to get them to change it.

And as I said more than once, it is now said to be easier to transfer number from one O2 contract to another. But you can read loads of queries on here and people recommending double use of PAC temporarily transfering to and from another network

Yes a PAC is for changing service provider. But the new service provider may use the same network as before. In this case you are changing service provider and remaining with the same network operator for which a PAC is required.

You do not use a PAC code to transfer from O2 Contract to O2 pay and go you just ring them up and they send you out a new sim card and tell you what date to start using it on.

In fact you cannot use a PAC code to transfer onto the same network.

    Well, I did.

O2 said you can, and issued and used the PAC to process the number from an O2 contract to an existing O2 Pay and Go SIM.

How many times does it need saying?
