i'm not lighting your blue touch paper!...lol.

Until you have used an NYC cab - Or indeed a cab in the enitre US then you can't really comment. If you have i apologise but guess you will know exactly what I am talking about.

Charges for taking you where to go.
    Charges for waiting.
    Charges for luggage.
Charges for helping you with your luggage.
Charges if you change your destination.
Refusal to pick you up unless its a $1000 fare.
Absolute arrogance and treated with complete contempt during the jounrey.

Admittedly I've only been to NY once, but we used cabs a few times and the drivers were friendly, chatty and (as far as I was aware!) didn't rip us off in any way.

I guarantee you, wholeheartedly 100% you will have been ripped off.

You might not have known it but you will have been. Either directly through a luggage fee etc, or indirectly through the extortionate pricing policy.

Speak for yourself - I've only ever had one bad experience (some cabbie had lent his cab out to a "friend" - something I only discovered (as a lone female) when he told me and we were in the middle of nowhere (cue panic from me. lol)).

Same city (I'm talking Nashville, not NYC) I got a cab from my hotel to go to another hotel to pick up some festival tickets. There was a mix-up with the tickets, so I went to the cab, explained there was a problem and asked if the taxi driver would mind waiting 5 mins. Due to the incompetance of the people who were meant to be getting the tickets from me, 5 mins turned into over 20 by the time I was done, so I was dreading going back to the cab. Anyhow, got back and taxi driver said he wasn't going to charge me for the waiting period as he could see I was stressed and upset (had just landed in Nashville). The guy was a saint and got a *big* tip from me.

Could well have been an entirely different scenario if you were a single male passenger.

As a regular traveller to Florida - we tip the wait staff - only because we now know owners of bars and stuff - they only pay their staff about 1-2 dollars an hour - they work for their tips - which is why they are much better at being polite and getting your meals for you (imho) and seem to be flying around and serving more people than you can expect.
Strange situation to be in really - but then I have never seen a place without good quality wait staff yet!
