So, as long as Miss/Ms/Mr Smiley keeps giving you 'free' pop, you're not bothered it the people who actually make/prepare your meal get financially incentivised - or amI barking up the wrong tree ?0

MURPH - Depends on the place - some tips are "put in the bucket" and shared at the end of the shift. Others pay the cook.chef far more than the waiters and therefore the waiters keep their tips.
Our regular breakfast place each waitress gives the "table cleaner" $1 per table, so if no tip is left - the waitress is at a loss straight away.
Murphy_The_Cat??? Barking??? Surely you mean meowing up the wrong tree?C. (Ex-Pat Brit)

I can't believe this thread has deteriorated into a negative, sarcastic, political and macro-economic slanging match (not a debate).
Anyone who does not agree with the concept of tipping should just stay away from the US - that's how they work and they aren't going to change it any time soon. Simples.
There are many worse ills in the world - perhaps we should direct our energies to addressing them.

now its really going to degenerate.
I'll tip as much or as little as I like, whenever I like, whereever I like, as often as I like.
Also.
I'll also visit wherever I like, whenever I like, as often as I like.
& if that is America, then so be it.
You do with your money whatever you see fit to do with it. If being a walking cash dispenser makes you happy, well done.
As for the many ills in the world, they can come under the category of 'my influence is only very limited, so I'll concentrate on that. As for the rest, c'est la vie'

Using the analogy that if everybody decided not to travel to a country that has customs, practices and other traditions that we do not agree with, then we may as well all tear up our passports.
ERICS MUM - If you are a worldly traveller - have a look at the places you have visited in your life and I bet there are aspects of some nations that are not palatable.
Many nations have awful human rights issues, some eat dogs and cats I can go on but I hope you get my drift.
I bet you have purchased something from your local high street that has been produced in a sweat shop in one of the countries you have visited.
That is the way it is in many countries - but why cut your nose off to spite your face by not visiting these countries and propping up their economies via tourism?
What will hurt that country more - someone taking the moral high ground because they do not believe in a countries way of life and stay at home or spend your money in these countries which at least will go some way towards helping the locals make a living.
I just find it difficult to see the reasoning of tipping for services that should be the norm such as pouring a cup of coffee in a cafe, now correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that what a waiter in a cafe is supposed to do?0 -
Its a simple answer.
If you get good service tip. If you don't then don't.
I never tip more than say $2 for a meal and usually just round it up. And i never, ever. ever, ever tip cab drivers ever. They are scum, nothing but hawks preying on people for every last cent and i'll be damned before i pay them one cent more than i have to.
All those here who say "leave 20% etc...." that is your prerogative but me, i don't really care for paying someone to do something they are already paid to do. Harp on about wages etc all day long, if they don't like their job then get another.
Tipping - The bane of US society.
Erics mum - Get a grip, there is huge difference between say covering ones shoulders when visiting a religious building and paying a waitress extra to... well be a waitress. The Summer Holiday of a Lifetime0 -
