I take the total figure, add 10% and then round it up to the next $.

You can of course give what you want, but they would consider 10% mean.

15 to 20% is the norm expected.

They can consider it as whatever they like, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to me ;).

I expect a lot of things in life, but I often don't get them.

BTW, does anyone else wonder why the lowest paid people in service (burger flippers and people in fast food outlets) don't get a tip, when they are doing exactly the same job ?

Don't like tipping, feel the % aspect is a con. Oreder an expensive bottle of wine why should a waiter get more money for that than a cheaper bottle? However when in the US it is their custom and practice so I go along with their policy just as in some European countries I don't tip as its not expected and in UK I tip on a case by case basis.
Last year in the states though I tipped, not heavily and double checked that I hadn't handed over the wrong notes but then the waiter offerred me drinks on the house, I told some friends about this and they said it had happenned to them before in some bars. It can work then this tipping lark.

Isn't that one step removed from theft ?

When in Rome do what the Romans do and if you don't like it then visit the US simple as.

Don't you mean if you don't like it then don't visit the US?

The US is a fantastic place - don't get me wrong - I love going there but why should I deprive myself of travelling there because I don't subscribe to this tipping lark?

There are many aspects of many countries I don't like.

For example, the corrupt officials, politicians and police etc. are rife in many SE Asia countries - but I still go there and I hope the money I spend there helps the many poor people who depend on tourists.

Likewise the USA - by not going as a matter of principle on tipping is cutting off my nose to spite my face. The money I spend will help the economy (albeit microscopic).

I do not like some aspects of certain religions - but I still go to the countries where it is practiced.

A Buddhist would not expect me to pray in a Temple when in Thailand for example and by the same token, I would not expect such a follower to attend a church here in the UK and there is nothing wrong with that. They have their ways - we have ours. I respect their beliefs and principles but they should respect mine as well.

The same to a lesser degree with tipping I suppose.

So the 'When in Rome' argument does not really wash with me I'm afraid.

    My sentiments exactly MTC!

The prices out there are so ridiculously inexpensive that even adding 15-20% the bill is still significantly lower than it would be here in the UK.

I took 6 people and 2 infants out for a 3 course meal for less than $150, gave the waitress a $25 tip which she was over the moon with. At the time the dollar rate wasn't far off 2 to the pound so i fed 6 adults and 2 infants for less than £14 a head.

To me the tip is part of the overall cost, if the service is poor, i leave a slightly smaller tip and don't go back.
CC Debt October[STRIKE]£9000[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]£7000 [/STRIKE]all finally on 0% Digging at the same pile but this month I've got a bigger shovel
July 2012 finally DEBT FREE :D

A side issue - if you are doing a % tip, do you calculate it on the total bill, or on the bill excluding sales tax?

Florida - usually the whole bill

So you give additional money, as a reward for getting poor service - hmm, I think that I'll pass on that

this is what i do in florida

15% for a meal as standard,
20% for a fantastic meal and service
    10% for taxi & $1 per bag
valet parking a few $'s extra
extra quarters and dimes into wee box in starbucks if i have loads in pocket.

enjoy it. I stayed at the Renaissance Tampa International Plaza, wonderful hotel, the mall next door is wonderful

This is exactly what I do. I never hesitate when I'm in Florida as I know it's an important and significant custom for them. I would feel disrespectful if I did not tip. When in Rome ......

I also leave a couple of dollars a day for the housekeeping staff who clean my hotel room. I travel alone and I quite often depend on taxi drivers, valet staff, porters etc so a good tip is worth every penny to me.
